Product Description

Review

"Amma Therapy presents Oriental medical theory in a clear and logical manner, detailing its philosophical and physiological bases from Eastern and Western points of view. It also gives a philosophical overview of wholistic health care and contrasts it to the Western scientific 'disease-care' system. A section on professional development, which is emphasized in the Sohns' program, includes a beautiful description of the stages of proprioceptive sensitivity that are available to the dedicated therapist. A detailed protocol addresses hand strengthening, full-body conditioning, and training in proper body alignment. In addition, the book examines ethical behavior, a timely subject for our profession."

Product Description

The word Amma, which means "push-pull" in Chinese, was applied to a form of Oriental massage dating back five thousand years to the period of the Yellow Emperor. Founded and developed by Korean-born Tina Sohn, Amma Therapy is a highly refined and complex system of bodywork whose techniques and treatment strategies combine the use of traditional Oriental medical principles and a Western approach to organ dysfunction. It utilizes a variety of techniques, sometimes paralleling those found in major forms of therapeutic massage, as well as powerful new points discovered by Tina Sohn.- This revised and enlarged edition now serves as a textbook for bodyworkers.- Accompanied by extensive illustrations and twenty detailed treatments for a variety of common medical conditions, this teaching guide explains and demonstrates the proper execution of Amma Therapy techniques applied directly to the physical body.- Includes nutritional and exercise recommendations providing a remarkably holistic guide for practitioners and students in all fields of bodywork.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nearly excellent, 18 Nov 2003
By c. j. smutny III - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Amma Therapy: Integration of Oriental Medical Principles, Bodywork, Nutrition and Exercise (Hardcover)
The text is well written though the organization of the material leaves a bit to be desired. It covers a large body of information about massage therapy, acupuncture and AMMA well though it could be better indexed. The subject by definition follows the flow of nature while the text does not. The structure of the chapters could have a more evolving continuity. As an example point information is distributed throughout the text without an area for general overview. Masters can use this for reference well but beginners are at a loss to find the "meridians" connecting chapter to chapter. I look forward to the next edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book for the Oriental Bodywork Therapist, 30 Jan 2000
By W.Kent Bergstrom - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Amma Therapy: Integration of Oriental Medical Principles, Bodywork, Nutrition and Exercise (Hardcover)
Of course I'm prejudice because of this is the text for ourschool [online] but this book that explainsthe complex style of Amma is an amazing reference for just about anyone interested in hands on techniques in Oriental Bodywork Therapy. Channel location, diagnosis , actual technique patterns etc are contained in this ancient technique Mrs Sohn brought to America years ago. And the price discount at Amazon.com is pretty amazing as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reference, 24 April 2003

I used this book for the Non-western portion of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It was quite helpful for this portion. I also used the following three volumes:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Human Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology) Vol 1
(ISBN: 0971999643)

The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions) Vol 2
(ISBN: 0971999651)

The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory, Assessment and Application. Professional Standards, Ethics and Business Practices) Vol 3
(ISBN: 097199966X)
These four books helped me to easily pass the NCETMB. The last three books give examples of the type of questions that are asked on the test. Believe me the guides are so complete for every possible topic given on the NCETMB.
