Book Description

31 Aug 2009
Of all the gifts that Jesus left us, his peace is most elusive. We long for it in our homes, in our relationships, in our life situations. One place we can look and see "living peace" is in the lives of the Amish. But you don't have to become Amish to bring these simple, practical ways of living into your own life and make personal peace a reality. Organized around five central themes in Amish life, each section will include real life stories, callouts of Amish proverbs, and interesting facts about Amish communities. Each section will also contain questions for reflection and action things you can do in your own life that "make for peace."

5.0 out of 5 stars Amish Peace 7 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Really enjoyed this book. It made me look at how i live my life and how i could make little changes to a more peaceful life.It made me realize just how stressful we have allowed our lives to become by trying to achieve and buy more than we ever really need. Our lives are only complicated because we allow ourselves to think this is how it should be, but this book shows it doesn't have to be that way.

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely book 10 Feb 2011
By A keen reader VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As another reviwer wrote: "It made me look at how i live my life and how i could make little changes to a more peaceful life."

I bought the book for my iwfe as a birthday present after we had re-watched Harrison Ford in Witness (great film, by the way an available on Amazon). She loved it and then bought three copies for her firneds! The book has great vignettes about Amish life which really make you think about how life could be a bit more peaceful and simple. I personally would find the Amish lifestyle restrivtive, but we could all benefit form better values and less hurry in our own life, even if we keep electricity and alcohol.

A highly recommended book: well researched and well written, with a great lvoe for the Amish people.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational! 24 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
What an inspirational book! The only trouble was, I was so inspired that I couldn't put it down, so maybe I will have to re-read it 'peacefully'! Makes you realise how complicated we have made our lives, and why it'd good to consider the long term implications of any new technologies we invite into them. In fact, why it's a good idea to consider most things, instead of just going along with 'what everyone else is doing/buying/watching'.

Love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for a busy life 21 Oct 2011
By Jean
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm still working my way through this book but it has already challenged and influenced my life. For me, as indeed the writer says, it's not about me becoming Amish but about maybe adopting some of the principles - in small steps -to achieve a less stressful way of life; after all, there are some habits I just get caught up in, like picking up my laptop and wandering around the web aimlessly when I have 10mins to spare, when in reality I could do something much more calming and constructive. The Amish sense of community and how they care for one another is also challenging. Anyway, I won't go on any more - read it for yourself - slowly! It's not a book to be hurried through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and delightful 19 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback
Thoroughly appreciated this book. Loved the approach. The author tackles one subject per chapter with insight from personal experience and stories gleaned from living with different Amish families. Then rounds each chapter off with questions regarding less 'healthy' aspects of our western lifestyle. Will revisit this book often. Glad I bought it ;-)

This book is easily understandable, and easy to relate to. As you read, you can picture the story unfolding. A good way to live in this materialistic world of ours.
