There are many iPod speaker docks on the market, therefore purchasing one is not exactly a straightforward or easy decision in my opinion.
I wanted to buy a speaker dock a few months ago and my criteria was that it would have to be small enough to be able to take away on holiday, have a decent sound, not be too expensive and finally it must also charge your iPod whilst in use.
Browsing on Amazon at the various speaker docks available, I was drawn to this unusual looking speaker dock which on first glance I thought resembled Darth Vader!
Also there was the added bonus that my daughter had purchased an Amethyst speaker dock perviously (although not this model) and was perfectly happy with it. I also had heard the sound quality of her speaker dock and thought it was really good, so I was optimistic this one would be just as good.
To look at, this iGhost is indeed unusual if not a little scary! It has been a good talking point over the few months since I purchased it, with friends and family asking what it is!
I suppose it does look rather strange just sitting there when it is not in use without my iPod Nano inserted.
You would be forgiven for thinking that for the price paid, it would be a tacky, flimsy looking speaker dock, but this certainly is not the case. The plastic moulding is thick and solid and the iGhost is also heavier than I expected it to be.
A mains adaptor is included and setting up is really easy. Simply plug into the mains and there is a switch on the base underneath to turn it on. When you do this, a LED blue glow is emitted from underneath which lights up whatever surface your iGhost is sitting on.
Your iPod then inserts into the top of the iGhost. Multiple cradles are also provided to ensure that your iPod or iPhone will insert into the speaker dock.
Once you have done this, then you can use the credit card sized remote control provided to access the menu on your iPod, select tracks, adjust the volume etc.
You can also do this via touching the iGhost itself, as there are touch control indicators on either side of the iGhost, which are clearly indicated.
The iGhost's 'eyes' are the speakers, with the third speaker located underneath.
The sound quality I receive from the iGhost is just as good as the sound quality my daughter receives from her Amethyst speaker dock. It far exceeds my expectations, as I believe on looking at the iGhost it does look more like a novelty product than a serious speaker dock and for that reason alone, I don't think anyone would expect the sound quality to be as good as it is. However, I am sure that like me, you would be pleasantly surprised. The sound is not tinny at all and does not become distorted as you increase the volume. A fairly deep bass sound is emitted and the overall quality I cannot fault at all.
One of the best features for me is that the iGhost does actually charge your iPod whilst in use and I can guarantee that it really does this, as there are speaker docks on the market which claim to charge your iPod and yet they don't.
Therefore it is ideal to take away on holiday with you and you have no worries about charging your iPod or buying a separate charger. I took it on holiday abroad this summer and it was great to have a little music in our room on an evening. Likewise if going on a short break in the UK, I have taken it with me and it certainly beats taking a CD player and various CD's with you. All I need is my iGhost and my iPod and I am sorted.
