With so much press attention surrounding Courtney Love’s private (and not so private) life, it’s easy to forget that she has been an exciting rock artist in her own right for several years. Rock star widows seem destined to fall foul of the tabloids, especially when they have the bare-faced audacity to express their own opinions. Ask Yoko Ono. Mrs Cobain makes it easier for them perhaps with her rather less zen approach to the press hounds, embroiled as she has been in noisy disputes with ex-members of Nirvana (mind you, Yoko and Macca have engaged in similar recently too), being disorderly in public (allegedly) and, most bizarrely of all, appearing in a Donald Duck costume to raise money for the Old Vic. None of that detracts from her ability to rock, and this album, right from its heavily ironic title, showcases her talent to full effect. Unlike “Celebrity Skin” this is an earthy, raw collection, more closely related to “Live through This”, but with a tauter, less grungey feel. “Celebrity Skin” was an enjoyable power pop affair but the end product was too polished (and the fall-out between Love and co-writer/producer Billy Corgan very public – neither of them is exactly a wallflower, after all). On “America’s Sweetheart” her unvarnished but not unconsidered remarks are complemented by a spare production. Maybe Courtney is exorcising demons once more but hey, you have to suffer for your art, right? Let’s hope Courtney thinks the suffering was worth it because to the listener it certainly was. Now you've read this, and if you want to buy the CD, don't get this censored version, get the explicit lyrics version instead, you know you want it, it's cheaper than this import too.
