Product Description

Product Description

This release continues the series of Americas Greatest Hits which over the years has provided annual collections of the biggest hits of each year in the Billboard pop charts. The collection for 1961 is an excellent value 107-track 4-CD set which includes every record that entered in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 during the year. Many of the tracks are, inevitably, well-known hits, which went on to score chart success in the UK, but there are no less than 45 tracks which did not make it into the UK charts despite their major US success, including tracks by well-known artists alongside more obscure hits by artists that never saw the light of day in the UK, from the classic Angel Baby by Rosie & The Originals to the oddity of a Scandinavian version of Apache. The whole collection is a highly entertaining trawl through the American music scene of the times, a rather different musical experience from listening to collections from the UK charts, which naturally feature a high proportion of home-grown talent. It captures the essence of the strands of musical creativity that were active at the time, from Brill Building producers to the Twist craze, plus country sounds from Nashville and some fine early soul. As ever, it includes comprehensive booklet notes with commentary on every track as well as the distinctive series packaging. It is likely to appeal to the many collectors who enjoy these completest anthologies, and will hopefully provide useful programming for the specialist radio programmes which feature pop nostalgia.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Series - But Not Always The Originals 30 Jan 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a brilliant idea - and the sound quality is generally excellent (although my CD1 suffered from a serious flaw on the last four tracks - but these things happen).

On a slightly more disappointing note - not every track is the original version, the most glaring example being "Raindrops" by Dee Clark. But with over 100 tracks at such a ridiculous price, who can quibble?

5.0 out of 5 stars Music at it's Best 10 April 2013
Format:MP3 Download
A SUPER Collection of Songs and Singers from an era when Music was at it's Best..... a lot of which is still evident and inspiring and as fresh today as it was 52years ago. A lot of the singers of then are still singing and entertaining in ld age compared to "modern songsters" who burn out after a few yesrs and hardly heard of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great collection from America's Greatest HIts. 7 Feb 2014

This is another great collection from America's Greatest Hits. These are all the songs from High School that danced to and played on the record player.
Guess this series stop doing the Yearly Hits after 1962 as I have 1959 through 1962 and cannot find any years after that.
Around 100 hits on each set of CDs.
