Guitar 'Postcard' Pictures by the Survivor,

Michael Chapman's 2nd album that offers guitar memories of his travels in the belly of America.An atmospheric mix of acoustic & electric playing. More abstract than Americana the first album. Great swathes of guitar. Sounds like a Mark Rothko painting or a sprawling Monet. Opening track La Madrugada is one of Michael's best. Album pushes the envelope of what people expect, playing banjo and with imaginative percussion loops. Awesome album. Buy this, close your eyes and see the landscapes.

The second album in the series inspired by and documenting Michael's journey across the Southern States of America. As 'Americana ' was about the soft, swampy atmosphere of the deep South, 'Americana 2' is made with the hard-edged light of the South West in mind.Again, the totally instrumental songs perfectly evoke the landscape and the lives of the characters that inhabit it. Each track has a story behind it, some weird, some touching, some just about being there and experiencing. He also records on banjo for the first time ever !!!. The album comes with a 16-page booklet of Michael's evocative photographs taken along the journey, which enhance the listening experience. Singer songwriter Michael Chapman first appeared on the London folk circuit in 1967 alongside such notables as John Martyn and Roy Harper. His first album release was 'Rainmaker' in 1969 on the Harvest label, and he was a permanent fixture on the folk and 'progressive' scenes during the festivals of the early 1970's. His gravelly voice, evocative lyrics and fantastic acoustic playing were enhanced by such musicians as Mick Ronson, Rick Kemp and Keef Hartley over the 20 or so albums that he has made to date.

offbeat near-genius,

I know nothing about Michael Chapman and his works, but this album really made me want to find out more - specifically, and to start with, the original Americana. The influences are many and varied, but the overriding one is country and folk blues - but with a real modernist twist and some great production effects. The opening track I heard on the radio and it alone made me buy the CD; it sounded to me a great deal like Alison Kraus's band Union Station, whom I love, and could listen with or without Alison (great though she is) anytime. But Chapman was also sort of darker and a little wierder - he evidently brings his own shtick to the tradition, in particular some really interesting percussion sounds and rhythms. Often in these compositions (which are exclusively instrumental, btw) there are mesmeric passages which are almost Reichian. All told, a wonderfully creative and inventive spin on the Grand Old Opree.
