Review

"One cannot overstate the need for this book. Instructors with any interest in socioeconomic issues in literature owe a debt of gratitude to professors Coles and Zandy. Until this book, there has not been a resource text for courses in working-class studies or in American Studies from a labor-literary perspective."--Laura Hapke, New York City College of Technology

"This is a long-overdue textbook. Attention to matters of class and labor, to working class studies, has been a subject of serious interest in American literature for the last three decades, but it remains an underrepresented field at the level of scholarship and teaching apparatuses. This volume is an important step toward addressing that lack."--Michael Elliott, Emory University

Product Description

American Working-Class Literature is an edited collection containing over 300 pieces of literature by, about, and in the interests of the working class in America. Organized in a broadly historical fashion, with texts and grouped around key historical and cultural developments in working-class life, this volume records the literature of the working classes from the early laborers of the 1600 up until the present. Though diverse genres including fiction, poetry, letter, and song, this unique volume demonstrates the diverse voices of America's working-class population but also their potential solidarity across the many differences of identity and location. Introductions for each of the seven sections and brief essays preceding each selection provide information about the author's life and writing, and accounts of the contexts - historical, artistic, political - in which that text was produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars A long-overdue, essential anthology for American literature, 16 April 2010

This review is from: American Working-Class Literature: An Anthology (Paperback)
I love this book. The introduction expertly articulates the editors' concerns, looking at issues of the working class through the lens of solidarity, struggle, and issues of the body, amongst other things. Editors Coles and Zandy also address the importance and the difficulty of understanding how the terms "working-class" and "literature" are defined. Their selections span a wide swath of American history, which they divide into chronological sections, providing context for important historical moments (the Gilded Age, post-slavery, the Industrial Revolution, the Cold War, the New World Order, etc.)

Some important events in labor history included are the Triangle Shirtwaist Strike, the Battle of Homestead, the building of the Trans-continental Railroad, the Driving Outs, Angel Island, the Depression (of course),the Lowell Mill Girls, the Harlan County Miners. Some notable authors included are Dorothy Allison, Stephen Crane, Upton Sinclair, Herman Melville, Rebecca Harding Davis, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Carlos Bulosan, Lucille Clifton, Steinbeck, Dos Passos, Maxine Hong Kingston, etc. They also include worker testimonials, voices that would often go unheard in more conventional, canonical, and restrictive mainstream literary circles.

The end matter includes a very helpful timeline of American history with an emphasis on labor and class. There is attention to issues of race and gender as well. Finally a bibliography of suggested reading is well-organized and a great resource for anyone who seeks to learn more about the often sadly ignored story of class in the U.S.

Just the fact of this book's existence is empowering. We need more like it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars American Working Class Book, 2 Nov 2011

This book was required for a class I had. It was the professor that made the book interesting. However, if you are into poetry, I highly recommend this book.
