From Amazon.co.uk

An undemanding slice of Irish whimsy, The Closer You Get may not hit the crowd-pleasing heights of Waking Ned, but ultimately settles in to a comfortable, enticing groove inhabited by the likes of TV's Ballykissangel. The debut feature of Aileen Ritchie and set in a desolate coastal town of Kilvara in County Donegal, the story concerns the lovelorn male townsfolk who advertise for Gaelic-loving women in a Florida newspaper. This action stirs the jealousies of Kilvara's women, who respond by inviting a group of Spaniards to the local dance. A battle of the sexes ensues ultimately resulting in the Guinness-swilling eejits realising that they shouldn't squander what they've got. Simple moral, simple clichés, simple humour, but executed with a considerable charm that makes it an undeniably enjoyable and light-hearted film. Ian Hart is particularly likable as local butcher Kieran (bizarrely dyeing his hair bright blonde to impress the ladies) while he and his boredom-numbed mates are more than matched by the feisty likes of Niamh Cusack and Cathleen Bradley as Kilvara's ignored beauties. Add in some beautiful locations and what you have is an inoffensive little charmer that will suit any lazy afternoon's viewing--and what's wrong with that? --Danny Graydon

3.0 out of 5 stars The Closer You Get....... 24 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:DVD
Being a frequent visitor to Ireland and knowing the area where this was filmed.....I found it very amusing. I have friends from this area and they can relate to the contents very well and found it very funny.....brought back memories for some!
The film is based on the fellas in a small village who are looking for women that could be possible future 'marriage material'. Having outgrown the women in their own village, they decide to try their luck and advertise for some nice American women. This angers the local females who set out to make the local fellas take notice of them and make them jealous by spending a lot of time with some fishermen who are visiting the area. The fellas, of course, have to try and impress the women to get them back and the antics they get up to are funny. They start to dress to impress and squeeze into tight white trousers and have new hairdo's...and thats the fellas!
As I said it is a funny film but especially funny to locals of that area who can relate exactly to its contents....definitely worth a look! Have a giggle!

It is a great film with a good portion of Irish humour. It transfers the observer to Ireland. Spectators how have been to Ireland will be able to recognise lots of little hints to the Irish way of life and will be able to draw conclusions to their own lovely experiences that they have made during their stay. Brilliant pictures of the Irish landscape of Donegal County underlined with a fantastic soundtrack makes this film a must for every fan of the "Emeral Island"

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 25 Feb 2008
Format:DVD
When I happened across this film I was impressed by the cast, and being fans of most of the actors and actresses in it, I bought it as a present for my wife. We settled down the other night to watch it and thoroughly enjoyed it - it's witty, clever, poignant and all in all a great film. If you don't enjoy this then you have no soul or humour!

5.0 out of 5 stars Predictable fun like the other fox flix films 22 May 2010

Fox flix brought us such memorable with their unique sense of humor as:
The full Monty
The impostors
Waking Ned Devine

In this presentation "American women", aka "The Closer You Get" we have bored single batchers who live at the end of the world in rural Ireland. Realizing that their prospects of meeting interesting women are few, they come to a scheme of advertising for American women in the Miami Harold.

Little do the suspect that the local women intercept their communiqué and have counter plans of their own. Now the fun begins.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Irish comedy 10 Feb 2009
Format:DVD
I love this film. It was made in my village, and I was a star in it! OK, so we stood around in the background for some scenes!

Its a wonderful Irish comedy, a good, simple laugh, with beautiful scenery. Fun for all the family!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mildly Amusing 23 Jun 2011
By Dismal Angel TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
My Thoughts: The Closer You Get is a mildly amusing comedy with highlights of the pain of real life and how reality isn't always as glossy as what we perceive from films and magazines. The acting is fairly decent here, but the laughs are few and far between. It had much more potential to be something special and my feeling was it just wasn't. This is a romantic comedy focusing on romance and yet doesn't really hit the nail on the head with any romantic sentiment or feeling. All this really does is show you how the lives of people in a small town start to intertwine regardless of their other romantic intentions. Worth a watch, but don't reach for the stars with this one.

The Plot: A bunch of dissatisfied Irish lads put out an advertisement in an American paper for fit attractive women, having tired of what their small village has to offer. As time goes on, the likeliness of their wishes being granted becomes less of a reality. The critical but style-conscious to a ridiculous fault Kieran is desperate to find love with a beautiful American and overlooks potential girlfriend Siobhan, who he is blind to realise that she is secretly in love with him. In an attempt to outshine and humiliate the men, the women of the village to decide to get their own back, instigating what may be war of the sexes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Candyfloss 26 Sep 2009
Format:DVD
If you like Irish movies that you can watch with a pint of Guiness and bag of chips in your hands and don't expect too many laughs or anything dramatic to happen, this movie should suit you. It's not as funny as Ned Devine but then it doesn't pretend to be.
I always love the country scenary in Irish movies ( like New Zealand)and the accents are always nice on the ear, so I'm not very often disappointed
