Book Description

Mother, wife, private investigator...vampire. Six years ago federal agent Samantha Moon was the perfect wife and mother, your typical soccer mom with the minivan and suburban home. Then the unthinkable happens, an attack that changes her life forever. And forever is a very long time for a vampire.

Now in AMERICAN VAMPIRE, private investigator Samantha Moon receives a heartbreaking phone call from a very unlikely source: a five-year-old girl who's been missing for three months. Now on the hunt, Samantha will use her considerable resources—including her growing supernatural abilities—to locate the missing girl before it's too late. And as she gets closer and closer to the horrible truth, she receives devastating news on the home front. Now with her world turned upside down, Samantha Moon is forced to make the ultimate choice of life and death.

And through it all, she discovers the identity of one mysterious man...a man she has grown to love.

**Acclaim for the Novels of J.R. Rain**

"Gripping, adventurous, and romantic—J.R. Rain's The Lost Ark is a breakneck thriller that traces the thread of history from Biblical stories to current-day headlines. Be prepared to lose sleep!"
—JAMES ROLLINS, international bestselling author of The Devil Colony

"I enjoyed this immensely. The protagonist, Samantha Moon, is a female vampire with a husband and children. Those predate her condition; six years ago she was attacked by a vampire and rendered into one. Now she's trying to carry on with family and private eye business, and she's a feisty, skilled person, so is doing mostly okay. It is not a horror story; she buys animal blood to eat and doesn't generally prey on humans. But her husband has an increasing problem with her coldness—not of spirit, but of body. 'You sicken me and scare the hell out of me,' he tells her. 'And when I touch you it's all I can do to not gag.' She replies, 'Words every wife wants to hear.' I love this! What makes it special are her character and nature."
—PIERS ANTHONY, New York Times bestselling author of Trail Mix: Amoeba

"Dark Horse is one of the best books I've read in a long time! A great classic detective story with a modern twist. Unique and interesting characters (I think I'm half in love with Jim Knighthorse now!), a great plot that kept me guessing until the end, and some of the funniest lines I've read anywhere."
—GEMMA HALLIDAY, bestselling author of Deadly Cool

"Impossible to put down. J.R. Rain's Moon Dance is a fabulous urban fantasy."
—APRIL VINE, author of Intrigue In India

"Moon Dance is absolutely brilliant!"
—LISA TENZIN-DOLMA, author of Understanding the Planetary Myths

"J.R. Rain is the new modern master of vampires."
—H.T. NIGHT, bestselling author of The Werewolf Whisperer

"I love Jim Knighthorse! Please write faster, Mr. Rain!"
—ELAINE BABICH, #1 bestselling Kindle author of Falling Down

"Moon Dance is a must read. If you like Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter, be prepared to love J. R. Rain's Samantha Moon, vampire private investigator."
—EVE PALUDAN, author of Letters from David

"I totally loved The Body Departed. As someone who communicates with those who are either earthbound or have crossed over—your descriptions and interpretations of the dialogue and circumstances could not have been written more accurately."
—JULIE BELMONT, author of The Path to Personal Success and Freedom

"I thoroughly enjoyed The Vampire With the Dragon Tattoo from one of my favorite authors. A great way to spend a few hours of the afternoon."
—JEN ASHTON, #1 bestselling Kindle author of Monstrous Love

"Powerful stuff!"
—AIDEN JAMES, bestselling author of Plague of Coins

"Jim Knighthorse is a throwback to classic detectives, which is probably why I love him so much. Funny, street-smart, and tough as nails. I love this series."
—SUMMER LEE, author of Angel Heart

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but starting to irritate me 16 May 2011
By amun
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Interesting ideas, a good character, well written, but two things are getting on my nerves. One is the use of characters from the authors other books, which always seems a particularly lazy plot device, to me. The other is that these books are actually very short, and even then a good 20 to 30 per cent of the 'book' is taken up with adverts for, and previews of, the authors other books. So you're actually paying for a short story, making them rather poor value for money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short changes the buyer 6 Jun. 2011

Whilst I like this series, I am getting increasingly irritated by the product placement of the author's other novels. 20% of the book is comprised of this making it a novella or short story rather than a novel. Not impressed, it detracts from what is otherwise a very gripping and new take on the vampire theme.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moon momentum keeps going 19 April 2011
By Dobsew
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This third instalment gets straight to the point and begins where the second book left off, which I'm pleased about. I'm loving Samantha Moon's character more and more as her story evolves and I love the fact that everyone she meets and who helps her with her PI cases seem to want to help her anyway possible and even protect her. Although she feels very much alone in the world as a vampire, Moon has more people that care for her and her family than she realises. Book three has another enthralling story and the fact that she can solve two cases whilst dealing with traumatic personal issues just shows how strong a character Moon is.

Thanks J R Rain for writing a brilliant series and I'm looking forward to October when book four, Moon Child comes out, if its anything like the last three books, its going to be an emotional ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fang-tastic! 1 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
American Vampire (Vampire for Hire #3)

WOW! Book 2, Vampire Moon, ends with a major cliff hanger and book 3 starts right where it left off! How I love Fang! I was gripped from the start and read the book way into the night instead of catching much needed shut eye! I am existing on coffee and the desire to absorb every written word! Mr Rain is the master of cliff hangers! I can't believe we have to wait until December to find out what happens next! Boo hoo! How will I cope?

If you have read and enjoyed the two previous Samantha Moon, Vampire for Hire novels, then you must read this one! It doesn't disappoint. I wish it was longer and I wish there was more Fang, lots, lots more Fang!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shaping up well 26 April 2011
By Bev M
Format:Kindle Edition
It is nice to "get in on the ground floor" with things like books. The Sam Moon series of books by J R Rain is such a series. A federal agent turned PI with a condition that makes working at night essential. It would have been easy for J R Rain to fall into the Twilight side of the vampire genre, lots of meaningful stares and long wistful thoughts but Sam Moon is normal, well as normal as a vampire PI can be. Her life is spent doing a job and trying to juggle a home, a family and now a broken marriage.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Twilight but I do feel writing about angsty teenage vampires is similar to writing about angsty teenagers. What J R Rain does is take a normal mum/wife and throw her a curve ball, not only that Sam now has a broken marriage, how do you go about trying to date when you are a creature of the night.

All these things and more come up in American Vampire which started on the revelation of who Fang is and ended on Sam having to make a heart breaking decision.

Give these books a try, you will not be disappointed.

This instalment of Vampire For Hire is much darker than the first two. Ok, its a vampire story, all about blood and death and immortality - I get it!! Vampires are dark creatures of the night!! But does Samantha Moon have to suffer so much? Having said that, there seems to be a sick understanding of child mortality in this book. It makes your heart bleed for Sam. But maybe she would find it easier to cope if she just let one of her huge hunky men into her life on a more emotional and physical level. Just saying!! Glad that the ex can't yank her strings any more though.
Will plod on with the series but need to slow down a bit!! These books are so addictive and easy to read!! Samantha Moon's world is both fascinating and intriguing....But maybe I need to live in my world for a while!!

5.0 out of 5 stars left me wanting more - oh please 18 April 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read the first 2 and not realising this was coming out the same day I finished book 2, I was straight onto Amazon and downloading American Vampire. The way the characters from other series are now appearing has enticed me to read others too. I really like the way the characters are developing and the conflict Sam has between the men in her life as well as the way her powers are developing. As some have already said, this story finished far too quickly, but all good things do. Dont they? I cant wait for the next instalment and to find out how Sam's dilema is resolved on how she can save her son. Bring it on - please

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampire for hire - Love the series! 8 May 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book kept me gripped and I just could not put my kindle down! Loving Fang, Kingsley, Sherbert and you get snippets of other characters which are all really interesting (Elvis has left the building). It ends on a cliffhanger and as you do, I went straight onto Kindle books to down load the next one "Moon Child" but it's not out until October (omg) I cannot contain myself. Oh well, I will just have to wait. If you love anything Vampy you must read this series, you will love them!
