Genius at work 23 Dec 2007
Format:Audio CD
Williamson's second of the Merry Band trilogy is possibly the most under-rated. It shows him midway on the journey from the eclectic, avant-garde String Band palette towards his own original brand of new songs in 'Celtic traditional' colours : more rigorous in feel than 'Journey's Edge' but not so austere as 'Glint' or the defining work in this style, the flawless 'Songs Of Love And Parting'.
'Stonehenge' does include one false note in the comedic but slight 'Zoo Blues', but compensates richly with several top-drawer masterpieces, such as 'These Islands Green', 'Keepsake' and the magnificently chilling 'Man In The Van'.
Like the other Merry Band records, this one also offers, in addition to the brilliant song-writing, a wealth of wonderful ensemble playing, including possibly the best guitar parts of Williamson's entire output.
Essential.

Not the best, but ... 25 Feb 2009
By Greywolf TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
After the Incredible String Band retired in the mid-70s, Robin Williamson packed his bags and moved to California, where he formed the prodigiously talented Merry Band, a group of musicians as skilled as Robin himself. And that's seriously skilled. They weren't together for all that long and only made three albums, of which this is the weakest. Having said that, even a weak album from musicians this talented still has many fine moments. Likewise, it's not Robin's best collection of songs by a long way, but that still means they're a lot better than some other songwriters' best. Of the ten tracks, about half really work, while a couple of others seem like throw-aways. There's enough here though to make you wonder what might have been achieved if the Merry Band had stayed together. As musicians, they were quite superb. Given a few more years, they might have eclipsed the String Band ...

Stupendously great 3 Sep 2008
Format:Audio CD
Really great tunes here. For a contemporary comparison I recommend Nick Worrall. His album is FREE to download as well.
