Product Description

Product Description

The Secret Projects series is now well established with both aviation historians and modellers. American Secret Projects: Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945-1974 describes the important area of post-World War 2 bomber development in the United States. During the period to the 1970s, the USAF operated several classes of bomber - heavy long-range types for strategic operations, medium bombers and fighter bombers for interdiction and ground support. The US Navy had its own series of attack aircraft and bombers for delivering nuclear weapons, while the anti-submarine aircraft was another area to be examined in considerable depth. As a superpower, America was also able to look at some of the more unusual approaches in the creative process - for example, bombers propelled by nuclear propulsion. Many of the aircraft that entered service or flew only as prototypes resulted from design competitions involving many other proposals which, for one reason or another, never left the drawing board. Following the traditions and format of previous Secret Projects titles, this book examines many of these un-built proposals but, at the same time, gives a full overview of American bomber development from 1945 to the early 1970s. The text opens with the first post-war jets and closes with the Rockwell B-1. It is illustrated with many general arrangement drawings and original manufacturers' models and artworks and many of the designs have never been seen in print before. Appendices give a list of all known bomber projects plus details of specifications.

Well researched and presented 10 Mar 2011
By Chicken Jim - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The post war years, from 1945 through the mid 60's saw an explosion of competitive innovation and experimental design in the American military aircraft industry. Many of the new ideas and designs were remarkably successful, while others never flew beyond second drafts.

This volume illuminates this exciting transition period, where aircraft manufacturers scrambled to capture new opportunities created as our technology grew from mature piston power to sustainable jet power, from straight wings to swept wings and from subsonic to supersonic.

It's a great reference and an interesting window into a time of changing technology and new stratecic needs.

Not a whole lot here that was new. But there are new illustrations and the volume does put the concepts and airframes into a chronlogical order in each chapter bringing some insight into the timelines of DoD procurments.

Another entry in the secret projects franchise 18 Sep 2011
By Jim Davis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is another book in the highly entertaining and informative "Secret Projects" series from Midland. Someone at Midland, noting that books on WWII German projects seem to be consistent sellers, wondered if the projects of other countries might as well. Twelve volumes later the answer is a resounding "Yes!".

The subtitle "Bombers, Attack and Anti-Submarine Aircraft 1945 to 1974" describes the book perfectly. The book is well organized into chapters arranged by aircraft type and time periods. In common with other books in this series there are appendices summarizing the projects in numerical order by manufacturer and also specifications issued by the services. There is an index and bibliography.

It is distressing to read of the numerous times when project material was destroyed when a competition was lost or a company went out of business or was absorbed by another company. I suppose we can be grateful for what information we do have. For myself, the information on the Martin B-68 design was welcome.

Highly recommended. It will be interesting where these volumes will go from here.
