HASH(0x9f286fb4) out of 5 stars You Ought to Be in Pictures 14 Feb. 2009
By Victoria A. Wildermuth - Published on
Format: Hardcover
Having recently read terrific books by Robert Wagner Pieces of My Heart: A Life and George Hamilton Don't Mind If I Do, I really didn't expect all that much out of American Prince by Tony Curtis. Wrong! This is a wonderful read and doesn't pull any punches. What did these three actors have in common? Devastating good looks that said: you ought to be in pictures.

Did Tony trade on his good looks? You bet he did! From his Navy days right on to his days in New York's dramatic workshop in 1947 via the G.I. Bill. His adventures alongside schoolmates Walter Matthau, Bea Arthur and Harry Belafonte to mention a few, right on to a screen test and seven year contract is a fun trip.

He worked with the best and slid under the wire of the last days of the studio system. His marriage to Janet Leigh as well as adding another Jamie Lee to the Hollywood gene pool is the true stuff of legends. If you are a movie buff, this book is for you. His adventures making such epics as "Sweet Smell of Success", "Trapeze", "Houdini", "The Defiant Ones", "Some Like it Hot" and the "Great Race" are quite a ride.

The Prince did it all the hard way and even became a talented painter. But he never won an Oscar and as they say in his hometown, Brooklyn: he wuz robbed.

Finally, the large print edition of "American Prince" is a beautiful presentation. Have fun, movie buff!
