Not Worth the Cost,
By Mr F.M. Josi (Waterfall, KZN South Africa) - See all my reviews
This review is from: American X and Y Planes: Experimental Aircraft to 1945 v. 1 (Crowood Aviation) (Hardcover)
I bought this book with very high expectations, only to be very dissapointed. The reason this book dissapoints is 2 fold, one, if you are new to this genre of aviation, this book fails as it does not in any way inspire the reader about the amazing aircraft it contains. With all the available tools and references found these days on the internet and software it boggles the mind that publishers continue to print books where an aircraft is described but not a single picture or photo of the described aircraft is included! What is the point? How can anyone get inspired by a little history chapter and specs when you don't even know what the aircraft looks like? Secondly, if you are an absolute fanatic about the subject of experimental planes (like myself), this book offers nothing more or new than what is already published. This is indeed sad as there is still no decent book published on the 'other' x-planes out there.
In summary, don't bother spending your money on this and the twin volume 2, you will find more information on Wikipedia on the aircraft within their pages, and at least you get a photo and 3-view drawing as well! The only positive aspect of the book, is that someone at least tried to cover the subject, it is just that they failed in the execution. Measage to publishers out there wanting to do books on aircraft. Always include at least one photo, one 3-view and a colour profile if possible for every aircraft.

Very good concise account of a fascinating subject. There were a few things in here I knew nothing about. Overall a great primer on the subject.

Not much for the money,

There are a couple of books here at Amazon that are a better value than this book that cover this topic. They are much more thorough, have more images, and are larger in physical size. Many of the planes described in this book are not even pictured.

An excellent supplement,
By James P. Fazekas "Army Aviator" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: American X and Y Planes: Experimental Aircraft to 1945 v. 1 (Crowood Aviation) (Hardcover)
Volume I is an excellent preview and addition to Volume II (also reviewed). While much of the information, as in Volume II, is contained in other works, this Volume contains much new, previously unpublished, historical information.
My opinion: well-worth the cost; as in Volunme II for the serious collector. |
