Philip Caine's "American Pilots in the RAF" is a very good history of the American manned "Eagle" Squadrons of the RAF. As well as giving a history of the these 3 units (71, 121 and 133 Squadrons) from the idea that birthed their formation, to their founding and operational history, Mr Caine uses a vast amount of letters, diary entries and interview transcripts to paint an excellent picture of what it was like to be a "Yank" in the RAF, and to live and fight as one in the air war over Europe.
Only two niggles with this reader: I have seen the odd minor inaccuracy but these are small and to be expected with a topic of this scope; and the book could have benefited from a far larger selection of photographs. But these are very minor quibbles and overall the book is an excellent offering and a fine tribute to those brave American volunteers who went to Britain to fight and die alongside her in those dark and turbulent times.
Highly recommended.
