Amazon.co.uk Review

The sixth entry in the long-running American Pie franchise anchors its story in the tried-and-true rivalry between nerds and jocks while serving up the non-stop barrage of raunchy gags for which the series has earned its notoriety. The twist in Beta House is that the nerds are actually the heels of the picture, while the heroes (as it were) are hormonally super-charged Erik Stifler (John White) and his pals, who pledge at their college's most chaotic frat during their freshman year. That the fraternity, Beta House, is run by Erik's cousin Dwight (Steve Talley) only works in their favour, but trouble rears its head in the form of the Geek House, a rival frat made up of socially awkward boys with money to burn due to their technological superiority. The apex of their clash is the Greek Olympics (inexplicably presided over by American Pie regular Eugene Levy), which descends into a frenzy of scatological sight gags (one bit, inspired by the Russian Roulette scene in The Deer Hunter, is jaw-droppingly gross). The sweetness that tempered the sex jokes in the original American Pie is completely absent from this entry; that, however, may not be a bad thing for some viewers. --Paul Gaita

Synopsis

Erik Stifler joins his cousin Dwight at the University of Michigan. Erik is nursing a broken heart after being dumped by his girlfriend while Dwight has his own problems to face in the form of nerdy GEK House, a fraternity who are attempting to destroy Dwight's own hard-partying Beta House. Erik, his best friend Cooze, and new roommate Bobby pledge to Beta House and enjoy all the hedonism that it entails. Meanwhile, the only way to settle the intense rivalry between the geeks and Beta House is to take part in the Greek Games, a campus ritual that was banned 40 years previously for going too far. American Pie Presents Beta House is a bawdy and enjoyable film that has many of the same elements of the previous films in the American Pie series, whilst also incorporating parts of National Lampoon's Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds. As was the case with the previous five instalments, Eugene Levy again appears in the film to give fatherly advice to the freshmen.

Once more they managed to increase the amount of nudity compared to the previous pies. Nevertheless there is some kind of story and a lot of funny situations.

The only thing I did not like were the two vomit scenes. Especially the "group vomit fight" is quite discusting.

Make sure to buy the unrated version in order to get the full frontal nuditiy!

I was greatly anticipating the release of this year's direct-to-DVD American Pie film. As I had liked "Naked mile" but disliked "Band Camp" I wondered how this would fare. I would rate this somewhere between the two. Some parts were genuinely funny but I sometimes felt the story was a little predictable and there weren't as many laugh-out-loud moments as in the first three films+naked mile.

The story is basically about a bunch of guys who go through trials to get into the Beta fraternity. After some trouble with the Geek fraternity, they end up being challenged by the geeks for their house to end their feud once and for all. If you don't know...you can probably guess what happens next...

I was slightly disappointed that the film did not come with any extras but then again, it didnt matter too much. The film was fairly good and if anything, instead of a purchase, I would rent it. For fans of the series, its probably worth the purchase.

Overall, I give it a 6/10. If there had been extras, it could have been a 7.

I have to admit that this is one of the best films i have seen this year. Plenty of hilarious college antics, lots of humour and what is a good film without a baddie/baddies to beat. I spent most of the film laughing my socks off. I hope that all future films are just as good.

Nothing special
It's true what they say about the American Pie series. With each instalment they bring out, there is a decrease in true comedy and much more a feeling of softcore porn. Read more
