Product Description

Ever since the very public dissolution of Jesse's marriage to Sandra Bullock first hit the news, fans have been clamouring to hear his side of the story. When he appeared on Nightline for his first interview after the scandal, the show saw huge overnight ratings, averaging more than 6 million total viewers. A staple on celebrity blogs and in the tabloids, Jesse's personal life remains the subject of endless speculation...until now. American paints a portrait of a self-made man who has known his fair share of triumph and regret along his path to fame. Born and raised in Long Beach, California, Jesse James was a teenage football star turned professional bodyguard who worked for many A-list rock bands, including Soundgarden, Danzig, and Slayer, and travelled the globe with them. After an injury sustained at a show, Jesse decided to set off on his own to pursue his childhood love: motorcycles. In 1992, Jesse began West Coast Choppers in a corner of a friend's garage. He built it from the ground up, transforming the tiny operation into a multi-million dollar business that caters to a host of celebrity clientele and has been the subject of Discovery Channel's hugely successful series Monster Garage and the documentaries Motorcycle Mania and Motorcycle Mania 2. A celebrity in his own right, Jesse has married and divorced both a porn star and Oscar Award-winning actress Sandra Bullock. In American Outlaw he sets the record straight, peeling back his public persona to reveal a flawed but sympathetic man who is willing to share his whole story with fans.

a great read 18 May 2011
Format:Hardcover
This is a great book. I read it in one day. It shows he is not the monster the media is making him out to be. Yes he did wrong but he has learned from his mistake. He shows that if we own up to our mistakes and deal with them we become better people. His mistake should not define him. It is only a small percentage of his life that has been blown up to make him look bad. The media are only out to sell a story even if it means destroying someones life. He is not an animal he is a human being who has been through alot in his life. As humans we all make mistakes. This is great read as I felt I had walked a mile in his shoes and realised who this man really is. If you have any heart you will do the same.

A Sad Tale 8 May 2011
By Guardian452 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
In many respects, a sad story. Clearly, Jesse James had a tough time growing up, and the hard work he put in to get beyond that and develop a successful business is admirable. However, after repeatedly beating the odds, his impulsive nature keeps setting him back. For example, a budding football career derailed by hiding stolen goods for one of his friends. Leaping off the stage into an audience on a dare and getting seriously injured. While he does seem to care about his family, his need to be a bad boy usually comes first. This contributed to the breakup of his first marriage, and his third. He blames a lot of his problems on his troubled youth, but at some point in your life you have to stop blaming your parents and start looking in the mirror.

If you're looking for a lot of gossip about Sandra Bullock, you won't find it in this book. She isn't mentioned until well over two thirds of the way through. He doesn't provide much detail about his infidelities to Sandra, except for speculating that maybe a bad boy and a sweetheart may not be the best match... He does blame her fame for not giving him the opportunity to get back together. He honestly seems to believe that he could have reconciled with her if not for the constant public attention. The problem here is that if you're smooth enough, it's easy to believe you can fast talk your way out of anything. The older you get, though, the harder it is to do - especially if you're in the public eye.

Would I recommend this book? No. If you're looking for gossip, you'll find very little that has not already been reported. The book mainly seems to be an effort to rehabilitate his reputation, and while he is clearly not the Great Satan, he is certainly not going to win awards for Mr. Congeniality based on this book. In the end, it is sad to read a story about someone who has striven so hard to overcome a hard life, won, then just threw it away, hurting a lot of people in the process.

Get this book from the library. 9 May 2011
By Rogue Iron Giant - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Like a previous reviewer said, "This isn't written by Jesse James." He does not have the vocabulary that is used often in the book. I wish that ghost writers would get more credit but I guess they don't care unless they don't get paid.

He doesn't deal with things he caused except to play victim. He talks about his life as if it was sooo hard. What does he want? Brownie points. Everyone's life is hard to that person. But only a very few write a book to tell the world how much they suck.

His show was entertaining but like anyting else it fades away like old soldiers do. Don't waste your money. Just get it from the library and save your money for our over-priced gas.

Blah Blah Blah 14 May 2011
By Scout - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was excited to read this book. I wanted to know what made this guy tic and why he would ruin his marriage.

It's obvious he didn't write the book. It's also obvious he wants readers to feel sorry for him and plays the victim. I don't know what his motives were for writing this book but I think I can guess. Unfortunately there is nothing new in this book, nor nothing that would make me feel sorry for Jesse. I actually feel sorry for the people around him because he has the woe is me mentality.

This book would be like Bernie Madoff writing a book and he claims he is the victim. I wish he had been more honest in this book. Don't waste your money this book will be in the bargain basement soon
