I first bought this album as a student in the early 1960s. Its still in the loft but I can only play CDs nowadays. What it is is early country music revived in the early years of the folk revival of the 1960s. It consists of then new recreations of dusty old country recordings from the 1920s and 1930s - and a bit later. When I first heard the album it was revelatory in that I hear Dobros, autoharps, modally tuned banjos and all sorts of wonderful stuff for the first time. Nowadays one can buy reissues of the 1920s and 1930s stuff easily so you might prefer to seek that out. But I love the New Lost City Ramblers with their quirky rusty and dusty voices. Folk revivalists they were but their influence was substantial. Glancing around I see my shelves stacked with this weird and wonderful music as I regarded it - marvellous.
