From Amazon.co.uk

Actor-turned-director Edward James Olmos set out to spread the word against the destructiveness of gang violence with this 1992 gritty drama. Set in the barrios of East Los Angeles, he attempts to cover 30 years in the life of a family with strong gang ties. This brutally realistic story may not intentionally glorify violence, but it offers no answers. (Olmos actually shot the prison scenes in Folsom, which explains their harsh reality.) Great performances though, especially by Olmos and William Forsythe. Olmos plays a gang leader released from prison who is finally in touch with himself, only to realise it is too late. The one major problem with this well-intentioned flick is that it is rated R for violence, nudity, and profanity. Therefore, the kids who most need its message are not, in theory, the ones who will see it. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4.0 out of 5 stars More than what it seems 16 Mar 2008

This is not only a story about criminal gangs, it is also an interesting look about the way ethnic groups (here, Hispanic) first develop those gangs as a way to protect themselves against surrounding violence, also about how those gangs keep living and growing in prison. The film is based on the life of authentic characters, and raised many reactions (see Wikipedia about it).

5.0 out of 5 stars top movie 10 Feb 2013
Format:DVD
this movie was brilliant, and i can honestly say ive never watched another movie like it. Im not saying its the best movie in the world, but it is very much original and not your typical hollywood glamorised crap. It is what it is and the makers must be very proud of there work. Im a 30 year old Scotsman from Fife who has no idea what it must be like growing up in.a Ghetto in any place in the world but this is a very realistic movie and it deffo gives you an insight into a whole new world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grimly watchable 1 Jan 2010

This is an excellent movie in many ways though the subject matter is grim and not for the faint hearted. It's difficult to know whether there are any positive messages but at least it does not glamourise prison, drugs or the gang culture it portrays.
