Oh Boy, what a mistake. 3 CD set that actually is only ½ a CD. Didn't realise it (well, it wasn't in the description)but most of the tracks are overdubbed with the 'Picks' unique style of enhancement. I've heard them described as 'intrusive' or 'criminal' but their style of singing just doesn't work. I even think they drop bits of their own musical instrument skills in here and there too. Ugh! Put it this way, think of a Ballad by Elvis accompanied by the Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band and a Barber shop quartet, yes it's possible but why would you? It's going down the charity shop tomorrow. Fortunately I only paid a 1p for this this set from an Amazon marketplace seller, any more and I would have been throwing my Wayfarers at the speakers. If you want a clean Buddy sound, go for 'Buddy Holly, Oh Boy' 21 originals digitally remastered, and don't be tempted by this.

WHAT AN INSULT TO THE CRICKETS 22 Feb. 2008
By Mark - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This album cover shows Buddy Holly with his band "The Crickets"...

For some incomprehensible reason, around 1985-90 someone in authority gave license to a group called the Picks to overdub any and all original Buddy Holly recordings with their vocal harmonies.

These modern overdubs of Holly's 1950s classics deface his finest work, and are widely distributed as "Buddy Holly and the Picks".

As result, there are surely a lot of people out there who think Holly's band was the Picks, and that Holly and the Picks were not very good (they're not).

Buddy Holly was an exceptional artist. Treat yourself to the real thing.
The Picks Were With Buddy Holly From The Beginning 19 July 2014
By DRM - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Buddy Holly is great. What some people still don't realize is that The Picks are not some random vocal group that interjected themselves onto Holly's recordings decades later with no connection at all to Buddy Holly. I really wish people would speak from some sense of a knowledge of the history of Buddy Holly. His first album: The Chirping Crickets, has multiple songs with backup vocals from The Picks. Their talented and seasoned vocals enhanced Buddy's work. Just like George Martin's experience enhanced the work of the Beatles. Buddy Holly's producer invited this established and well known vocal group to contribute in a major way to Buddy's first album. His very first album. The Picks were with Buddy Holly from the beginning. They are not at all some vocal group that hijacked Buddy Holly's work.

Additionally, it's great that more recordings of Buddy Holly are coming out. This is not a bad thing. As some misguided "purists" fear and loudly proclaim. Some of the recordings sound much better that the earlier offerings...while still maintaining the integrity of the original recordings and while still sounding like classic early rock and roll. Even as Buddy effortlessly expanded into orchestral arrangements, pop, the sky was the limit with this legendary trailblazer. If only I could stop hearing about how The Picks supposedly swooped in out of nowhere!

Avoid this! 12 Jan. 2006
By Micaloneus - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This album is once again an overdubbing of Buddy Holly classic recordings with backing vocals by the Picks, a.k.a. John Pickering and the rest of The Picks who drown out Buddy's performances. Avoid this at all cost!

Buyers beware!
