Product Description

Product Description

For freshman- and sophomore-level survey courses in U.S. History.

The Brief Edition of The American Journey was created by rewriting and cutting to condense text, and by using fewer photographs, maps, and charts to illustrate the text. The Combined Brief Edition is about one third the length of the original text, and comes in Volume I, Volume II, and Combined Versions. The Combined Brief Edition introduces students to the key features of American political, social, and economic history. Written in a clear, engaging style with a straightforward chronological organization, it provides students with a solid framework for understanding the past. It gives prominent coverage to the West and South and highlights the importance of religion in American history. It traces the emergence of distinctively American ideals and the way the conflict between those ideals and reality has shaped our nation's development. It brings alive the crucial issues and events behind the continuing effort of Americans to live up to their ideals. Compelling stories, ample use of quotations, and excerpts from primary sources bring the past vividly alive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, ideal for the history enthusiast, 23 Jul 2006

I bought his book to read a chapter or two for an American History exam at uni, but ended up reading the whole book because it was so interesting and well-written. It did take a while - it is about 1000 pages long, but it certainly was very enlightening reading. The lay-out of the book is lovely, the countless illustrations, photos, maps and diagrams have an album appeal, but at the same time it is the text that dominates, so you don't feel as if this is an illustrated children's book with a narrative of just the basic moments in history (as I find many illustrated editions tend to be). This is an extremely student friendly account of America's history, with Review Questions included at the end of each chapter to test your understanding, as well as a list of recommended books for further reading, and a Where to Learn More section, which tells you about various museums, festivals, monuments etc which have a place in US history.
