Well I've been eyeing up this album since it's release only to assume by the front cover that it would be another "Heavy" album. Don't get me wrong I love "Born Again Anti-Christian" but it just never lived up to the amazing heavy Goth sound of "Pornographic Messiah", it was instead more goth metal and the last release from Valor being for his wife's band LOVER OF SIN which was indeed metal through and through I assumed I was going to hear Christian Death ending up sounding like LOVER OF SIN and like every other symphonic black metal based band.

HOW WRONG I WAS ! ............ to my delight.

Christian Death have returned with a GOTH album !! Something which they havn't done properly since the early 90's in my opinion. Yeah it still has a loud heavy guitar sound but the production on it is trademark goth and what good goth bands were all about. The bass lines are the main focus of the production next to vocals. They are extremaly catchy and may take you back to the great day's of Fields of Nephillim greats like "In Her Light" etc.

To be honest there isn't really a bad track on the album. The first being the only one I don't think that much of and the last few tracks have minimal lyrics with repetative cheesy chorus lyrics but this is totaly over shadowed by the spine tingleing brilliance and simplicity of the music.

This has made me hit the old skool goth shelves of my CD collection again with possitivity towards a scene that seems to be dying musically for quite some time.

Christian Death have made one of the best Goth albums I have heard in 10 years or more and at the minute is becoming one of my favorate of all time.

Valor looses his recently used rough, dark growly voice for a lovely singing voice that gives this album so many "goth classics". He's singing softer and more meaningful than he was on oldies like "She Never Woke Up" etc.

Lost faith in Goth bands of the last 10 years? GET THIS ALBUM !!!!

Firstly, american inquisition is the same in feel to the brillance that was the scriptures, from way back in 1986. Only this is updated with the feelings and input that todays mystical society has become.
The best songs on this are 'see you in hell', 'narcissus the metamorphosis of', 'dexter says no to methadone'. All of which have a rock heaviness and a gothic feeling that is very Christian Death.

'Stop bleeding on me' is a track that has a twin vocal demonstraing a new kind of shared limelight between principle members Valor and Maitri.

A beautiful song 'worship along the nile' which has a great bassline throughout which carries the highly suggestive subject matter along. It is very obviously a jibe at some of the current successful artists that parade their 'booty' to young kids who aim to emulate them. Tongue in cheek and very expertly executed.

'The last thing' is probably the greatest anti bush-administration song on here with its subtle tale, dreamlike, of how the newspapers and media consider no one as they plot and rape the world.

'water into wine' the opener feeds this feeling.

Interspersed in the whole CD, are dramatic poigniant statements, lost on all but the more inquisitive. Which most american s aren't, and so the american inquisition obviously means the american s should ask their own government serious questions about everything. The web site and myspace pages seem to elaborate on the sentiments and even go so far as to show excerpts of the zeitgeist movie that points out many similarities between religions and various government practises.

I would describe this album as a modern day concept album, but it holds up well for a few good loud blasts of songs in the car. 10/10 Valor, Maitri and everyone... Can't wait for the Tour..

This album is a total return to form on all fronts for the most consistently challenging, inventive and possibly most controversial band of all time; Christian Death. "Born Again Anti-Christian", its predecessor, contained some excellent songs, but suffered from a lack of the textural diversity and lush instrumentation associated with the group. Meanwhile, female vocalist and bassist Maitri's side project, Lover of Sin, reinstated the layered approach, albeit at the expense of melody and - sometimes - song-writing.

By contrast, "American Inquisition" exhibits numerous brilliant arrangements, including wonderful violin playing from Valor, which often evokes eastern melodies, piano, ethnic percussion, samples and heavenly choirs alongside some scathing electric and sweet acoustic guitars. The swaying bass and snaking rhythms are topped of by Valor's trademark vocals, often in duet with Maitri. Valor really seems to have rediscovered the full range, power and beauty of his voice on this disc, and the end result is all the richer for it. Moreover, the CD showcases some of his most moving, poetic and potent lyrics in many a year.

With such a range of feelings, styles and atmospheres contained on this opus, it proves difficult to choose favourite tracks. From the martial and thought-provoking "Water into Wine" to the energetic "Narcissus...", from the sepulchral orchestrations of "Dexter Said No to Methadone" to the layered guitars of "Surviving Armageddon", the quality of the compositions is amazing. And, that hasn't even mentioned the sheer pulchritude of "Angels and Drugs", which really should be a massive hit, if only it could receive the requisite radio airplay.
