In the second to last album recorded before his death, the legend that was Johnny Cash managed to build on all his experience and talent to record an album that holds its own with his greatest recordings.
Cash recorded a series of covers with a few originals, joined by a few decent guest artists. The choice of covers is inspired - Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down" (on which Petty guests), Neil Diamond's "Solitary Man", and, oddly, U2's "One". Cash takes them all and makes them his own. Especially "One", Bono never performed it with that depth of feeling.
The backbone of the album are two tracks near the middle, "I see A Darkness" and "Mercy Seat". Both moving songs of regret, delivered in a world weary style of a man who's seen it all and done it all. Songs Cash could never have done justice to as a younger man, these deserve to appear on all best of albums from now own. The album is worth getting for these two tracks alone.
The rest of the album is no filler though- "one", "Nobody", "Field Of Diamonds" and "I'm leaving now are all very strong tracks that would make any album a worthwhile purchase.
Not a mere "Country" album, this has depth of feeling, dark and moving lyrics, a dash of humour, all coming together into a complete whole. This is highly recommended and will appeal to more than just Country fans, any fans of thoughtful music will enjoy this.
