Product Description

Award-winning crime drama directed by David O. Russell and starring Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. Based on the Abscam sting operation of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the story follows FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper) as he blackmails conman Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) and his lover Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) into helping him with a case after a successful investigation into the pair's own foreign banking scam. Although DiMaso's sights are initially set on New Jersey Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), the investigation is broadened to include influential members of Congress who are suspected of taking bribes. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Lawrence as Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn, Louis C.K. as DiMaso's superior at the FBI and Robert De Niro as ex-mafia hitman Victor Telleggio who has now turned to the casino business as a means of making money. The film was nominated for ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Bale), Best Actress (Adams), Best Supporting Actor (Cooper), Best Supporting Actress (Lawrence) and Best Director (Russell), and also won three Golden Globes and three BAFTAs.

I loved the opening scenes, especially those of Christian Bales comb over composition.

Bale is excellent throughout as it Amy Adams, however it is the scenes with Jennifer Lawrence that are laugh out loud as the trailer trash, common, scheming wife.

Bradley Cooper was suitably annoying and the secret of THAT hair is revealed about halfway through.

The sense of time and place are great and it is comparable with Good Fellas for that.

Some may not enjoy the lack of action but it is the performances that drive this film and based on that it is superb.

4.0 out of 5 stars Such A Time 19 Mar 2014

Have we been hustled by this film? At times I thought so, a little slow going at first, but then it interrupted into a fast paced film that brought excitement. The film was fashioned after the Abscam affair in the late 80's.

"Abscam--sometimes written ABSCAM--was a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) sting operation run from the Bureau's Hauppauge, Long Island, office[1] in the late 1970s and early '80s. The operation initially targeted trafficking in stolen property but was converted to a public corruption investigation. The FBI, aided by a convicted con-man, videotaped politicians as they were offered bribes by a fictional Middle Eastern sheik in return for various political favors. The investigation ultimately led to the conviction of a United States Senator, six members of the United States House of Representatives, one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey, and an inspector for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service." Wiki

Now we see how this entire affair went down, and what we have is a film with superb characters and acting. Christian Bale is the epitome of the com man, and with his intelligence, Amy Adams, good looks and brain, we have one heck of a scam. The FBI enters with Bradley Cooper as the leader of a group, looking for a couple of good arrests for a fame hungry leader. Jennifer Lawerence as Bale's wife knocks the ball out of the park with her role. Jeremy Renner as the mayor of a New Jersey city, always on the make for his city brings truth and life to his role. Every one in this film out did themselves, believable and so ironic. Can a con man con those in the law? Robert DeNiro plays the second in command of a Florida branch of the Mafia.

The film has certainly got an all-star line up fronted by 'Christian Bale' and 'Bradley
Cooper'
Talented Con-artist 'Irving Rosenfeld' and his equally talented partner 'Sydney Prosser'
rather than go to jail are forced by ambitious F.B.I agent 'Ritchie Dimaso' to help him
expose some high-rollers in the hustle-business in the shape of 'New Jersey' power-
broker 'Mayor Carmine Polito' who's dealings include the Mafia and many leading
political figures.
The situation the two hustlers are walking into appears to be way over their heads with
a high-risk scenario, these guys do not play games.
'Sydney' initially knew very little about 'Irving's' wife 'Rosalyn' or the existence of his
young son.
'Rosalyn' isn't always predictable and could easily blow the op' wide open, putting 'Ritchie'
'Sydney' and her husband in danger (a woman's scorn)
The film is for long periods pretty slow-moving, because of it's acclaim you are expecting
it to suddenly take-off.
'Jennifer Lawrence' won best supporting actress for her role as 'Rosalyn' (rather she'd won
her Oscar for 'Hunger Games')
'Christian Bale' plays 'Irving' 'Bradley Cooper' F.B.I agent 'Ritchie' and 'Amy Adams' plays
'Sydney'
The film based loosely on one or two real events is set in the 70's for which there is one or
two mainly great 70's sounds.
Special Features :-
* The making of 'American Hustle'
* Deleted and Extended Scenes.
* Film run time 138 minutes.
* Rating 7/10.

3.0 out of 5 stars Overhyped? certainly. Over-rated? probably. 23 Jun 2014
Format:DVD
A lot of talent working hard in this movie, but only with sporadic success. One of the biggest names, Robert De Niro, has an uncredited cameo, and unkind though it might be to say, I think his decision to keep his name off the credits was a wise one. The problem is with the rhythm and direction -- there are scenes that seem either unnecessary or to go on to long. For example, the scene with the agents who believe that they have just taped an incriminating phone call is probably not needed, but certainly goes on far too long. The scene with Richie (Bradley Cooper) and Sydney (Amy Adams) in the bathroom stall adds nothing to our grasp of these characters or to the plot. The running gag of Richie's boss (Louis C. K.) and the ice-fishing story is weak and unnecessary The big party scene involving the sheikh and the mobsters -- way too long. Carmen Polito, mayor of Camden, NJ, goes on and on about how his constituents are his family, long after we get it. The energy of the actors and the excellent production values aren't enough to save these scenes, and they throw the rhythm out of kilter.

George Roy Hill's "The Sting" ran like clockwork -- like the sting itself. This is a sort of sting movie, and (thanks to Rosalyn [Jennifer Lawrence], the wife of con-man Irving Rosenfeld [Christian Bale]) the sting DOESN'T run like clockwork -- but the movie should, and it doesn't. The con artists, Irving and Sydney, are constantly having to adapt to unforeseen circumstances -- and there is a possibility of humor in that -- but the adjustments aren't always as funny as they could be. There is a certain satisfaction in the ending's showing that folks who have to con for a living are better at it than the government, but I'm not sure that that makes up for the dull patches on the way.

This could have been great. The cast is top notch, the story interesting, the acting good, but the pace is far too slow. Over rated by the critics because of the director. Read more

For me this was a waste of good actors and resources. The plot didn't merit the expense of making the film.

The lavish praise for this film gets turned on by scenes & features that are adolescent and pre-adult, beginning with the opening five minutes of Bale fussing with his comb over. Read more
