I watched this on sky recently and was hooked from the very first epsiode. From the trailers I had seen it looked scary but it was better than I expected it to be.
The opening credits are very creepy and two minutes into the first episode I knew I was going to love the series.
Ben and Vivien Harmon move into a new home with their teenage daughter Violet to try and rebuild their marriage after Ben has an affair. They get the house cheap as the previous owners were the victims of a bizarre murder/suicide but the Harmon's don't believe in ghosts and don't let this put them off.
The house has a history. Nearly all of it's previous owners have died within it's walls. Some were murdered and some committed suicide and if you die in the house your spirit stays in the house.
Each episode starts by showing a previous death that occured in the house and through this by the 12th and final episode we are shown a complete history of the house.
This series has shocks and twists and will keep you hooked. I don't want to give too much away but this is the best tv show I have seen in a long time.
I loved all of the series but my favourite was episode 11.
I can't to wait to see what series 2 brings and I just hope it's as good as the first.
I just wish the dvd's were coming sooner as I'm desperate to watch this again.

American Horror Story takes the familiar haunted house tale and refreshes it in unexpectedly original fashion. To understand just what makes this series so unique it needs to be experienced first-hand, but to those venturing into the strange and twisted world of the series expect plenty of sex, violence, body horror, and a healthy dose of shock and gore. Perhaps the only real disappointments of the series are its unnecessarily stretched-out length of 13 episodes (a 6 or 8 part mini series would have been more effective) and the constant exaggerated domestic disputes between the lead characters becomes grating after a few episodes. Nonetheless, not one to be missed for horror fans. Non-horror fans, just know what you're getting into.

i found American Horror Story a real surprise package.
I admittedly started from a low expectation point and found myself hooked on this excellent drama.
Firstly it is a proper horror show, with some genuine spine tingling moments.
Next the stories are really rather good. this is very well written.
The direction is taut and the acting superb.
I am not going to include spoilers, if you haven't seen the show you will probably enjoy it more not knowing what's coming next.
That is, when all said and done the point of horror, the unexpected.
Horrible, but in a really good way.

Okay... Campy but different from anything I have seen. The series (this one) takes place
around a haunted house where a dysfunctional family, the `Harmon's move in. The husband
Ben is a psychiatrist who runs therapy for his patients from the home... Vivian is the wife constantly
pi***ed at Ben for his weakness in young women. And Violet is the teenage daughter who moves in
and falls for the other psychotic teenage ghost, Tate - son of Constance, the weirdo next door (played
excellently by Jessica Lange).

Predictably, the house has had a sour past of the other occupants killing their families - or themselves.
The neighbour clearly knows more than she lets on and has sinister plans when the wife becomes pregnant.

So much more but I don't want to spoil anything. If `Six feet under` or `American beauty` were of the horror
genre this would be the result. The performance from Zachary Quinto as the former gay occupant playing a
ghost just made me laugh like hell! Same with Jessica Lange as the nosy neighbour who keeps appearing
from nowhere. Her performance is creepy yet over the top! `American horror story` plays out more a dark
comedy than a serious horror... It is however addictive though to watch. Completely over the top but fun
and engaging!

Much like many a horror film, but instead stretched over 10 or so hours, American Horror Story starts quite strongly but ultimately fades away into something fairly forgettable. In fact, two weeks after completing it I really can't remember the ending (you don't get problems like that with Breaking Bad et al, just to give you a comparison point)

So recommended as an easy watch but it won't be moving onto the 'top tv shows' any time soon.

Despite my one star which I will go on say about in a minute this has to be one of the recent triumphs of television drama. Pure undiluted Gothic horror laced with dark humor, credible performances and just the right amount of kinkiness makes American Horror Story a 'cult' classic before it's time - in my humblest opinion .

Now for the sad bit , our censors have cut this although what they have cut has been shown intact when screened by the FX channel on Digital Broadcasting - go figure. I also have noticed since FX showed the uncut pilot episode there hasn't been a surfeit of suicides in the UK either.

And some of you thought it was just the 'visuals' that take a snipping.

Details as follows :

American Horror Story (Pilot Episode) is a USA drama horror mystery by Ryan Murphy.
With Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott and Evan Peters. See IMDb

UK: Passed 18 for strong horror and self-harm images after 5s of BBFC cuts for:

UK 2012 20th Century Fox Season 1 RB Blu-ray at UK Amazon released on 15th October 2012
UK 2012 20th Century Fox Season 1 R2 DVD at UK Amazon released on 15th October 2012

The BBFC commented:

Cut required to remove potentially harmful dialogue describing a particular suicide technique.

The bit in question is when Tate is telling Violet she is not doing it the more 'successful' way with a razor blade.
As mentioned the pilot(or episode 1 for those who like a smidgeon of continuity) episode has been broadcast numerous times on TV in its uncut form.

There is also an uncut US release

So if you want to enjoy this show then the USA Blu Ray or DVD is the one to plump for.

Such ridiculousness censorship has to bring this down to a one star rating - the rest 5/5 !!

Vote with your wallets folks and support the region 1 release !!
