I watched this on sky recently and was hooked from the very first epsiode. From the trailers I had seen it looked scary but it was better than I expected it to be.
The opening credits are very creepy and two minutes into the first episode I knew I was going to love the series.
Ben and Vivien Harmon move into a new home with their teenage daughter Violet to try and rebuild their marriage after Ben has an affair. They get the house cheap as the previous owners were the victims of a bizarre murder/suicide but the Harmon's don't believe in ghosts and don't let this put them off.
The house has a history. Nearly all of it's previous owners have died within it's walls. Some were murdered and some committed suicide and if you die in the house your spirit stays in the house.
Each episode starts by showing a previous death that occured in the house and through this by the 12th and final episode we are shown a complete history of the house.
This series has shocks and twists and will keep you hooked. I don't want to give too much away but this is the best tv show I have seen in a long time.
I loved all of the series but my favourite was episode 11.
I can't to wait to see what series 2 brings and I just hope it's as good as the first.
I just wish the dvd's were coming sooner as I'm desperate to watch this again.

5.0 out of 5 stars CENSORED BY THE BBFC !! 1 Oct 2012
Despite my one star which I will go on say about in a minute this has to be one of the recent triumphs of television drama. Pure undiluted Gothic horror laced with dark humor, credible performances and just the right amount of kinkiness makes American Horror Story a 'cult' classic before it's time - in my humblest opinion .

Now for the sad bit , our censors have cut this although what they have cut has been shown intact when screened by the FX channel on Digital Broadcasting - go figure. I also have noticed since FX showed the uncut pilot episode there hasn't been a surfeit of suicides in the UK either.

And some of you thought it was just the 'visuals' that take a snipping.

Details as follows :

American Horror Story (Pilot Episode) is a USA drama horror mystery by Ryan Murphy.
With Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott and Evan Peters. See IMDb

UK: Passed 18 for strong horror and self-harm images after 5s of BBFC cuts for:

UK 2012 20th Century Fox Season 1 RB Blu-ray at UK Amazon released on 15th October 2012
UK 2012 20th Century Fox Season 1 R2 DVD at UK Amazon released on 15th October 2012

The BBFC commented:

Cut required to remove potentially harmful dialogue describing a particular suicide technique.

The bit in question is when Tate is telling Violet she is not doing it the more 'successful' way with a razor blade.
As mentioned the pilot(or episode 1 for those who like a smidgeon of continuity) episode has been broadcast numerous times on TV in its uncut form.

There is also an uncut US release

So if you want to enjoy this show then the USA Blu Ray or DVD is the one to plump for.

Such ridiculousness censorship has to bring this down to a one star rating - the rest 5/5 !!

Vote with your wallets folks and support the region 1 release !!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's behind you!! 23 Dec 2011
This show is nuttier than a box of frogs!! There's a big haunted house full of ghosts who don't know they're dead all out for revenge on whoever they can kill first. A family with a very hunky but unfaithful psychiatrist husband move in just as the previous owners an unhappy gay couple are being sodomised to death at their Halloween party. The poor family who can't walk into a room without some ectoplasmic nutcase whoooaaaaaing at them with a bedsheet start to fear for their lives but by this point you know it's already too late. It's brilliant, with lots of great references of everything from Rosemary's Baby to Psycho to Amytiville and Jessica Lange is brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! It's nuts but you'll love it!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly unique horror experience 24 April 2012
If you're a fan of the horror genre (or even psychological thrillers) then this is one show you can't miss! It has everything a horror/thriller and gripping drama should have; with intense characters and twisted storylines that leaves you craving more and thinking "did that really just happen?" ...

I first watched it with the intention to only see the piolt episode, but over seven hours later i was still glued to the screen! Artistic, imaginative, disturbing, horrific and powerful - its truly a unique experience that will stay with you a long time after you finish watching the last episode.

5.0 out of 5 stars American Beauty 17 Sep 2012
By All of them Witches TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Very recommended made for tv series concerning the horrific events that have historically woven themselves into the fabric of one particular suburban house and the impact this has on successive dwellers.
Pretty much faultless I thought; very good performances especially from neighbour Jessica Lange and the younger cast members who were astonishingly competent actors, but all the characters were excellent. Really nice set pieces, special effects, storylines and unexpected events. It was nice to see this quality of writing and budget being pumped into a horror series in comparison to some of the indistinguishable dross that is pumped out with frequent regularity.
It is thematically horror first and foremost though has its share of melodrama and poignancy. The juxtaposition throughout is outstanding and my days how hot is the younger incarnation of the red haired maid? Sexiest woman I've seen for years.
This series features someone being offed pretty much every episode, also features some sexual violence, illegal abortions, child slayings, school shootings and other events likely to disturb those of a nervous disposition. I really, really enjoyed it.
