1.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing! 9 Mar 2011
By K. Black - Published on
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I got this to show my 8th graders. It mentions that it has professional actors portraying the famous characters. This is just a film of black and white, blurry photographs. No actors. I am sending this back. For middle school students, this would be a complete snooze-fest.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Historical Documentary 25 April 2012
By Jonathan Turbide - Published on
Be transported into the wild and wooly past of the American Wild West! In this fascinating 12 documentary collection, you'll find history, lore and biographies of the lives and times of those who populated the Wild West. The American West featured all sorts of legendary historical figures from pioneers and scouts to lawmen, outlaws, gangs and gunslingers, to the American cowboy, and pioneering women on the frontier.

I like this DVD set. I agree, it's far from being perfect, but I like it. I like watching old documentaries, learning more about the past, learning more about History. What I like about this set is that it covers a lot of subject you don't usually find on DVD. From legendary outlaws to the great Indian wars, this DVD is full of interesting and fascinating information about America's past and the Wild West. The narrator is a little boring, and sometimes the information is repetitive, but overall it's gonna be a good addition to your collection. The price of this set is great (I got it for only 5$),and like I said earlier the amount of information given to us is impressive, so I don't regret this buy. If, like me, you're interested in History and the Wild West then buy this set, you won't regret it.

The documentary is 9 hours long, in 12 parts:

- Wild Bill Hickok - Parts 1 & 2
James Butler Hickok (a.k.a. Wild Bill) was the most notorious man in the Wild West. A gunfighter, gambler, civil war spy, Indian fighter, peace officer, Hickok was said to have killed more than 100 men but the real total was closer to 10. Widely recognized as the man who won the first classic gunfight on the streets of Springfield, Missouri in 1865, he was shot dead in Deadwood, South Dakota ten years later. This DVD explores the man, the myths, and his legends like nothing else you have ever seen.

- Wyatt Earp - Parts 1 & 2
Wyatt Earp carved his initials deep into Old West lore as a peace officer in Dodge City, Kansas and Tombstone, Arizona. With a pistol in hand, a badge on his chest, and his brothers by his side, Earp delivered a personal brand of frontier justice. But at a legendary place called the OK Corral, his dead aim left his reputation forever tarnished.

- Old West Cowboys - Parts 1 & 2
This episode is about the Old West and Cowboys. Genuine still photography, paintings and recreations create an authentic and unique glimpse of the historic time period.

- Gunfighters of the Old West - Parts 1 & 2
This documentary traces the history of many of the Old West's most notorious gunfighters and describes some of the most famous shootouts, including the James/Younger gang's bungled Northfield Minnesota bank robbery, the Daltons' attempt to rob two banks simultaneously and the carnage that resulted and the Earps and Clanton gang's shootout in Tombstone, Arizona.

- Great Indian Wars - Parts 1 & 2
In the early 1800's, white families of America packed up their wagons and headed westward looking for more land or gold. As these early pioneers began to step on and take Indian hunting grounds, every Chief had to decide what to do. Should he tell his people to stay friendly with the whites or should they fight them and make war? Some of the tribes gave in, but most of the Indians fought for what they believed was theirs. These would come to be known as THE GREAT INDIAN WARS. See and hear these true stories and tales from the Old West.

- Geronimo - Parts 1 & 2
This captivating documentary presents the story of the Apache warriors and their chief, Geronimo, told in his own words taken unedited and unchanged from the interviews conducted by S.N. Barrett and Asa Deklugie. It also contains many rare historical photos detailing the life and times of the last of the great Indian warriors, the people who followed him and the enemies they fought.

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely unacceptable photo quality + Monotonous narrator's voice = One of the worst video ever. 26 May 2011
By Cestmoi - Published on
- I can't imagine that the producer and distributor of this DVD dare to release such a product. The photos and movie clips are so faded that they're hardly visible on my 32 " Sony monitor. (It's not an HD TV. However, it displays sharp pictures from other movie DVDs). This is absolutely unacceptable.

- Moreover, there is only one narrator. His voice was so monotonous that after hearing him for 30 minutes, I felt asleep!

It's a shame on Mill Creek Entertainment for distributing this. I own another DVD from them called "America's Serial Killers. Portraits in Evil". It's much better.

In short, this documentary is worth nothing. It's one of the worst video ever.
5.0 out of 5 stars A true documentary, a fact filled & exciting tale of the old west 6 Feb 2014
By musashi - Published on
This documentary is a TRUE DOCUMENTARY. Something you won't find on TV nowadays, and as a true historian, with a college degree to prove it, this documentary is amazing. Look at what the people who disliked it gave as proof, the narrator's voice was boring?? it didn't contain tom cruise reenacting a mostly made up script from a 'directors vision'?? give me a damn break, if you love history, you will want this DVD as I did, and watch it several times over.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Pictorial Documentary 11 Dec 2013

This is a well-researched, well-written, well-edited, well-presented, and well-narrated historical documentary. I would highly recommend this DVD both for entertainment and educational purposes. The pictures are as clear as can be. I find the background music not only very enjoyable and appreciative, but also very relevant to the period of the events.
