Format:Audio CD
An astonishingly mature debut by A A Bondy. The former Verbena frontman leaves behind the idea of becoming the lead singer of the "new Nirvana" for bluesy folk songs about damnation, failed love, drugs and salvation. His voice has a wonderful southern rasp drawn from his Alabama roots and his songs shine brightly. Check out the classic "There is a reason", the memorable "Vice Rag" and protest in the form of "Witness blues". This is by no means new territory. Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan and Gram Parsons have all mined this rich vein but Bondy brings a charming freshness to American Hearts and is a rising star of Alt country along with contemporaries like Anthony da Costa and Abbie Gardner . A good free session of his songs can also be found on Daytrotter. I would venture to suggest that this album will not dissapoint, but its your money!

Bondy found his true voice with the hauntingly beautiful "Believers" (2011). "American Hearts" is his first album, now four years old, and contains enough laid back, soulful material to show what he would go on to achieve. Bondy's plaintiff, aching voice is backed by interesting arrangements from simple acoustic and slide guitars on the opening track "How Will You Meet Your End" to more complex, heavier songs like "No Man Shall" with harmonica, heavy bass and fuzzy guitar lending rich textures.
Maybe the songs are not as instantly memorable as those on "Believers", but they are certainly worth a listen.

aka Scott Bondy formerly of the band Verbena. They put out 3 excellent albums that also rock. A rare but simple thing, an album that is solid from start to finish - its cohesive but not monotonous. Absolutely so glad that i didn't miss this.

Missing Track

Take a look at the back cover and you'll find that the vinyl version of this album is missing the first track, "How Will You Meet Your End?" I love Bondy and my records, but I can't get past this very puzzling omission. We emailed the label and they shipped us a CD, no explanation in sight.

Great Album kinda country, kinda folk, kinda dark.
I love this album, I bought it when it came out and have seen Bondy live, twice.
Do yourself a favor buy this album for Sunday mornings or late night drivin.
Oh and his harmonica, perfection.
