Product Description

Rock'n'roll was born in the United States - and 1958 was the year it was exported to the rest of the world. Buddy Holly, who kicks off our first disc with 'Rave On', hit British shores in March with the force of a musical hurricane. Following closely behind him were the like of The Chordettes, Bobby Day, The Everly Brothers and Connie Francis, all included here on this 2 disc compilation.

I guess '1958' would be around the time when I began to sit-up and take notice
of the music of the day.
'Rock'n'Roll' was still in it's infancy, 'Pop' was beginning to share the limelight also,
and there was still room on the music-scene for many of the pre-rock explosion artist
to continue chart presence.
'American' artists, many of whom are on board this release, perhaps, more than had
their share of the U.K chart positions, of course many British artists were also breaking
onto the Rock/Pop scene back then.
'Novelty' songs were also popular during the late 50's and early 60's, there are one
or two 'gems' included on this 2-CD compilation including....'Witch Doctor' 'The Purple
People Eater' and 'Beep Beep'' among them.
There are, as is often the case, one or two 'B-sides' on board.
I'd like to highlight a few of the great memories from each of the two discs, just to give
a flavour ...............disc one.........'Buddy Holly' --'Rave On'....'The Big Bopper' --'Chantily
Lace' (of course both 'Buddy' and 'The Big Bopper' along with 'Richie Valens' and the
pilot died the following year in a plane-crash) ...'Ricky Nelson' --'Poor Little Fool' ...
''The McGuire Sisters' --'Sugartime'....'Laurie London' --'He's Got the Whole World in his
'Hands'....'Conway Twitty' --'I'ts Only Make Believe' (I remember regularly visiting a local
café with a shilling in my pocket to play this one over and over back then (from memory
I think we used to be able to play three songs on the juke-box)....and....'Jerry Lee Lewis'
'Great Balls of Fire'........just a few of the magical memories on disc one....on disc two....

DAY2CD233

American Heartbeat, 1958

This addition to the popular One Day Music series brings a further 50 tracks for your nostalgic entertainment. The liner notes are by Brian Parks who has provided many such resumes for the label. Attractive and colourful sleeve and illustrated inner liners with 1950s imagery. As with many 1950s compilations you are on the musical cusp of a decade. You will hear many of the well known performers of the earlier years along with new sounds. The running times are CD1: 61.25 & CD2: 63.31.

Here are some of the artists featured...

Bobby Freeman (born June 13, 1940) is an African-American soul singer and songwriter from San Francisco, California. He is best known for his two Top Ten hits, the first in 1958 on Josie Records called "Do You Want To Dance?" and the second in 1964 for Autumn Records label, "C'mon and Swim". At age 17, he scored a hit with "Do You Want To Dance?" and appeared on the pop charts with various follow-ups through 1961. In 1964, he was back in the Top Ten with the dance-craze hit "C'mon and Swim", which reached Number 5.

Ross Bagdasarian (David Seville) was born in Fresno, California on January 27, 1919. He started writing songs at an early age. In 1951, he and his cousin William Saroyan, wrote a number one hit for Rosemary Clooney titled "Come On-A My House". On his 1958 recording "Witch Doctor" [55132], it was the first time he employed sped-up vocals. He would record his voice at 1/2 speed, and play it back at normal speed.

The Champs were an American rock and roll band, most famous for their Latin-tinged instrumental "Tequila".

It was most enjoyable listening to these two CDs, the music of my youth! There is a good mix of songs, artists and rhythm. I am so happy that I am still able to buy these CDs because I don't hear them on " Golden Oldies" programmes here (South Africa). Thank you Amazon for making them available

An excellent selection of records from that period.
The quality of the recordings are outstanding considering when they were produced.
