5.0 out of 5 stars Credit where credit's due. 4 Sep 2006
A very watchable movie, other reviews are harsh and obviously don't appreciate a stylish, well written and beautifully shot film. This movie pulls you in and keeps you guessing to the shocking end. It's scary in terms of the suspence but it's not a horror movie, if you loved Sleepy Hollow you'll love this.

Must first of all say I disagree strongly with the first two reviews written for this DVD. This is a rather good film, however the story telling suffers a bit. I found myself thinking this is just another haunted house-story and I couldn't quite see where it was leading, or how the two stories in the film were connected. In fact I was tempted giving up on the film several times but didn't much due to to the superb acting of Sissy Spoacek and Donald Sutherland, who as always throw in a solid performance. However seeing the ending of this film made it all worth the while. It has one of those twists that make you see the film in a brand new light. For this very reason the film turns out to be a very interesting one, standing out from your average horror film. However I still feel the film is a bit of a missed opportunity due to the first 3/4 of the film. All things considered not a bad film but could have been so much better. There is a lot more potential in this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars A criminally underrated horror masterpiece 31 July 2008
There are many things in this world I will never understand, and one of them is how this movie's ratings can be so low. Simply put, An American Haunting is the best haunted house movie I have ever seen. I have to admit I did not like or approve of the way the story ended, and the modern-day intro and exit scenes were wholly unnecessary, but everything in between is pure haunted gold. I have to believe that some viewers' dissatisfaction comes from knowing what happens before they see the movie, as even the editorial review on this page reveals one of the film's core secrets. As much as I disapprove of its existence, that particular secret (which bears the unmistakable fingerprints of sleazy Hollywood) plays out beautifully in the film's presentation. Cut out the modern-day cinematic bookends, and this film has one of the most impressive scripts I've come across in some time. The much-ballyhooed cast play up to their potential and then some, the direction is flawless, and the special effects (including the POV scenes that some viewers ridicule) are, to my mind, incredibly effective. I absolutely love An American Haunting.

Basing itself on the only documented case in US history of a spirit causing someone's death, An American Haunting basically markets itself. Don't get too wrapped up in the historicity of this movie, though, as director Courtney Solomon plays fast and loose with the true story of the Bell Witch. The "based on true events" moniker is in fact quite disingenuous, as this movie is really based on Brent Monahan's purely fictional novel The Bell Witch: An American Haunting.

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, boring film 13 Jan 2013
After a promising start, the film soon settles down to boring repetition, with scenes of girl attacked by demon, bible readings, exorcism etc. repeated over and over again, each scene a bit more violent than the previous one, which fail to make up for a very unimaginative plot of an angry witch casting evil spell on family.

I stopped watching it with 30 minutes left to the end, by then I couldn't careless how the film ended.

...then this is your movie. This is one of my favourite suspense/horror/paranormal movies of all time. The twist at the end is brilliant and would be very difficult to deduce, because pertinent information is witheld from the viewer until the end. I don't want to spoil it, but denial of truth when faced with evidence is a strong theme in this movie. The age-old question of whether witchcraft/demons/paranormal activity exist or not is explored in a unique way. This movie is a bit like The Sixth Sense in that you are given hints that are easily noticed in subsequent viewings. Unlike a previous reviewer, I enjoyed the tie-in to the present day and how we often miss what is plainly in front of us. I also enjoyed the very talented cast members performances and the way the movie did not leave us hanging as to the outcome of one of the main character's life.

Remember that things are not always what they appear. Or are they?!?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very spooy! 29 Sep 2007
By Willz
After reading the other reviews of this movie I ended up leaving it a year before watching it- but I was suprised and not disappointed! If you're looking for something scary this Halloween I'd say highly recommended- not since watching the BBC's "ghost watch" have I thought a film was so genuinely scary!
