Biography

Quasi formed in Portland, Ore., in 1993, which means that it's been fearlessly rocking since long before your website launched or you booted up an iPod. For years -- 17 to be exact -- it was a duo consisting of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. In 2006, Joanna Bolme (of Stephen Malkmus + The Jicks) joined the band on bass.

Quasi flings words and notes relentlessly, hurling music across the ... Read more in Amazon's Quasi Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Howling At The Moon 14 Dec 2010
By The Wolf TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
Quasi are a three-piece band form Portland, Oregon.
They make a bit of a racket but it's a good racket.

Sam Coomes sings and plays guitar and keys; Janet Weiss
hits the drums and provides backing vocals and Joanna
Bolme plays bass. There are ten songs in the collection
and an eleventh track featuring a dog called Mac howling
entitled...erm...'Mac Howling' (!)

There's a rough and ready energy permeating this project which
occasionally belies the innate musicality of its creators.
Jump to 'Everything and Nothing At All' for a tasty glimpse
of what can happen when a good tune gets kicked out into the
world by the seat of its pants with unbridled and unaffected
enthusiasm. The jagged edges are the greater part of its charm.

'Bye Bye Blackbird' is a cracker too! The well constructed
vocal harmonies cut through the wall of blistering guitar
chords like sunbeams piercing a dark cloud. The hokey lyrics
add another uncomfortably ambiguous layer of mood and meaning.
The band cooks up a mean jam in the central section which must
have made the studio walls shake, rattle and (probably) roll!

'Death Is Not The End' is a wonderfully dark slice of Gothic
blues. It staggers along like a wounded animal for a little
under three minutes and Mr Cooms shows off his particularly
fine falsetto to good effect.(His big top-note is a scorcher!)

'Rockabilly Party' is a total hoot! The calmitous arrangement
reveals a dry sense of humour. The traditional folksy elements
are torn inside out and catapulted into the air like a flock
of ragged starlings hurtling home to roost. Stirling stuff!

The final song in the bunch is in many ways the strongest.
The bi-lingual 'Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler' doesn't quite
convince us that the good times are, indeed, going to roll
but it brings the album nonetheless to a mordantly witty close.

Mac the Dog's final solo howl-fest thrilled me,
as I am sure you can imagine, immensely !!

Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kick ass 17 Mar 2010
By Adam Steinfink - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I don't know if this is Quasi's best record, but it certainly is their most kick-ass!
If you like Jimi Hendrix mixed with indie piano, and dark lyrics than this is the record for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars quasi american gong review man 24 Feb 2011
By The Jerk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
For the record I will say that I do not like, "little white horse." My bad. But there is plenty of room left for what else this album has to offer. And it's typical quasi mostly. Quasi has been toiling in what does it all mean lyrics for what I have gathered, and this album is no different. The most intense songs leave for some deep pondering and inspiration, "Black dogs and bubbles", "Death is not the end," and "Laissez les Bon Temps Rouler." "Death is not the end," is great, should have been ten minutes. "The jig is up," is a short little acoustic goodness. A welcome addition to the quasi fan's gathered collection.

I love great rock n roll; therefore I love Quasi. This is a Quasi record; therefor I love it. Great songs, great music, great production, great record.
