4.0 out of 5 stars INTELLIGENT GROOVES, 15 April 2007
If you've know that Princess Superstar alias Concetta Kirshner is one of the most creative musical forces around at the moment you will want to decide whether to follow her on this excursion into techno dance. It is a departure for sure, although recent albums have hinted at a move from hiphop towards dance. But techno might not seem like promising direction and the tracks string together almost imperceptibly so that you could think the track you are listening to is long when in reality you're three down the line. But she overlays loads of disco and house grooves which slide in almost undetected.

With all the credited participants, is the Princess Superstar branding justified? Without it there is no way I would have bought this record. It is, and for one reason. Quality. Dipping into techno territory can be an encounter with an alien world seemingly designed only for people whose judgment has been chemically suspended. But with this offering the Princess makes it otherwise.

True, because of the surface sameness, you have to suspend use of quite a few of the usual emotional centres leaving only about two still functioning. No; one. Well, OK; two

It would be easy to say the appeal is hypnotic or mesmerising. Think Frank Zappa's Hot Rats or Phillip Glass's score for Koyaanisqatsi, and yes, like in those works, it is the subtle shifts of beat and colour that have to do the work. But there is one other aspect that applies here that applies to all PS's music. You feel when you listen to it that there is a mighty intelligence at work. One that is on your side. And one that can morph itself any which way.

To buy or not to buy? I'd say buy, and not just to completists. If you have any kind of musical taste you won't have anything like this in your collection already. And there is maybe more under the surface than anyone has yet realised. As with all music you have first to accept the premise.. With each listening this CD reveals more and becomes a kind of centre of gravity you return to.

No, make that three emotional centres still working.
