Armani and Blondie 4 April 2009

Let's face it, the quality of most films depends on the way the actors look - so why not have a movie which is all about the way the actors look? The glittering surfaces of American Gigolo disguise some heavy themes - what happens to a man who behaves like a female prostitute? What happens to a woman who marries a public figure politician? The film can't quite handle these themes; perhaps they would have worked better in a novel, but instead it provides a good story about frustrated love, waking up too late and narcissism. It's under-rated.

For audiences all over the world California, sunshine and beaches have been synonymous with sex and glamour. Add a Richard Gere going through a phase of playing men who can't really give themselves and a Lauren Hutton at her most fragile and gorgeous, and the cocktail should be good enough for anyone who cares to remember the 1980s as a period of sexual confusion. There aren't many films which explore the fat man's envy of the hunk, but this one does. I guess you either get it, or you don't.

This was the first film I ever saw with Richard Gere, and he gives an excellent performance as Julien, a gigolo, who lives on the edge. Enjoying a lifestyle with designer-label clothes, beautiful women and money, he meets an upper class woman, Lauren Hutton, who falls in love with him. Down and out, and facing trial and prison for murder, she is his saviour. But Julien finds it impossible to understand why a woman of her background would want to be with him.
Very enjoyable movie

Talented writer-director Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver) sees Gere as a lonely man (Male Escort) trying to deal with both his own spinning moral compass and the hypocrisy of the society that's trying to tell him what to do for money. Gere is immaculately dressed; a stud for hire who services the wealthy women of Beverly Hills without ever allowing himself to be touched emotionally.

This is a thriller, but not an exciting one. The music of Blondie complements the film and gives it even more atmosphere. It needs it because the film drags along too much. The plot takes a few twists and turns as the film comes to its surprising conclusion, but one thing that's never made clear, or perhaps I wasn't paying attention, is where exactly Julian(Gere) was on the night of the murder. It's obvious that he's innocent, but where was he? He may have spent all or part of that night with the wealthy woman who, along with her husband, repudiates him, but I'm still not sure. One of the better thrillers of the 1980's even though it was a poor decade for movies.
