Amazon.co.uk Review

A slow burning, yet entirely gripping, mobster film, American Gangster pits Denzel Washington’s Frank Lucas against Russell Crowe’s law enforcer Richie Roberts. Spread over a necessarily prolonged running time, their story is then brutally, expertly, told.

And while American Gangster isn’t in the league of prime Scorsese and Coppolla classics (such as Goodfellas and The Godfather), it’s the nearest we’ve come in quite some time to something of that ilk. It’s all based on a true story, which does mean you need to forgive it some of its obvious narrative conventions, yet this also lends it a gravitas that the film eagerly makes the most of.

It’s great too to see British director Ridley Scott tackling meatier material again. This is the man, after all, who gave us Blade Runner, Alien and Gladiator, and he duly delivers with American Gangster. His finest work it isn’t, but an engrossing, explosive and hard-as-nails drama it absolutely is.

What’s more, American Gangster is powered by two of the finest leading man working in Hollywood right now, and it’s terrific to see Washington and Crowe on top form here. And while in cinematic terms it’s hardly a film that treads new ground, it’s nonetheless a proper, grown-up and engrossing movie, and a very good one at that. --Jon Foster

5.0 out of 5 stars Staggering story, 11 Jan 2010

Given the lineup of Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington and Ridley Scott, could this movie fail? No

Weighing in at almost 3 hours (extended edition) one could be forgiven for thinking that American Gangster would be a bit of a drag but no, it moves along quite nicely pacing out the action against the story. The story itself is very hard to believe in the end but it's Hollywood vs facts again. Crowe and Washington, as always, deliver the goods even though they aren't onsceen together too much (no DeNiro/Pacino moment really). One of Ridley's greatest (no mean feat!).

5.0 out of 5 stars A lesson in not juding a book (dvd) by its cover, 25 July 2011

This review is from: American Gangster Extended Edition [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
American Gangster is one of those films that I was put off buying, on the assumption it would be a 'blood and guts', 'shoot 'em up' type of film, and indeed my heart sank when I watched the opening scene. I needn't have worried though, AG is far above most other recent films of this genre, with a depth to it (allowed for no doubt by being based on a true story) that tends to be missing from many such films nowadays, where special effects are seen as a substitute for a decent plot.

As other reviwers have noted, it's a long film, but one that keeps the viewer hooked right to the end. From being a film purchased for no other reason than it was cheap AG has gone straight into my 'keeper' section and I can't really offer a higher recommendation than that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gets better with repeat viewings, 5 Mar 2011
The visual style of this film is quite toned down for one of Ridley Scott's, but that actually pays off with a concentration here on story and acting.

The script is tight, with an underlying edge about business practices and most notably the cutting out of the middle man in modern business.

The combination of depth and some top notch performances, make this one of Scott's best ever films. In a day of crass and empty Hollywood fodder, Scott produces a serious and adult take on a problem, that thirty years on, is still with us.
