A Meditation on John Mellencamp’s Life, Death, Love and Freedom
A few years ago, the Hungarian ambassador to the United States asked me to moderate a panel discussion at the embassy on “Rock & Roll as a Force for Freedom on Both Sides of the Iron Curtain.” The panel was to consist of the ambassador (András Simonyi), Tommy Ramone and me.

Not only was this album a huge commercial success for John `Cougar' Mellencamp in 1982, it reached number 1 in the U.S. and Canada and was 5 times Multi-Platinum in both those countries (only his 1985 album would manage those sales again, but only reaching no. 2). With American Fool, JM started to be heard in Europe, probably mostly in the UK and countries like Sweden.
This would explain, the fixation some radio stations still have for the number 1 hit single `Jack & Diane' ** which I find bland (each to his own). The single released just before that, `Hurts so Good' **** is so much more enjoyable: it's sassy and it's great to dance to and sing along to. Mellencamp said that he came up with the lines of the chorus while in the shower (that was cheeky already!) and then he finished the song very quickly with his then very good friend George Green. The video was pretty crass, on purpose I guess. The song reached no. 2 in the U.S. and no. 1 in Canada and featured on the 1998 re-issued soundtrack Footloose, `cos it's so hard not to dance to it . I really like the next single (also co-written with G. Green) `Thundering Hearts' ** it packs a punch with some dirty guitars and aggressive vocals and it has a perfect chorus for live performances, but has never been included in any compilations. `Hand To Hold On To' * was also a single, it's catchy too, somehow, despite the simplistic lyrics and the unexpected romantic style.
In fact, the album has a good balance of early eighties rock tunes and slow songs. Of the latter, personally, I don't get `China Girl' which was not written by Mellencamp at all, it does sound very different indeed, a sort of pop country tune with some stereotyped sound and wording; but make up your own mind, of course.

this is probably the best john cougar album, after he started to realise who he was and before he got serious about life (but don't let that comment put you off the later albums, they're great as well but for different reasons). this is "turn it up loud, open the sunroof, and imagine your driving across the nevada desert"...trust me buy it, if it doesn't move you, see a doctor, you may be dead!

This album is great and well worth spending money on. Jack and Diane is a classic and will always be associated with JM. The rest of the album is easy listening and great to play in the car and sing along to.

I probably have to thank the late great Mick Ronson for getting me into this. Apparently it was he who laid down the in-your-face guitar of Jack and Diane, which was many people's startling introduction to this guy. There's some great songs on this album, all with a hard rock edge, and I'm afraid I'm in the camp which say he never bettered this. His later work got a little too political and pretentious for me, but I still play this gem regularly.

Arguablly it is. This collection shows JCM at his very best, with far too many highlights to list. For anyone interested in experiencing JCM's music then they could do far worse than start with this CD. In my humble opinion only Uh Huh and Lonesome Jubilee have come close to capturing the essence of his music as well as he has here. A must for any fan.

John Couger / John Mellencamp or John Couger Mellincamp, the full name keeps changing but dispite this the quality of his musical output is generally consistant. This album opens up with stunning 'Hurts so Good' and continues with the big hit 'Jack & Diane' The high point for me, however, is the closing track 'Weakest Moments' (Or at least on the original recording this was the closing track). This is just good Americain Rock with a hint of country thrown in, with a dose of good intelligent lyrics.
