Colorful Salute to American Volunteers in the RAF! 17 Mar. 2006
By Michael OConnor - Published on
Format: Paperback
Well known author and Osprey editor Tony Holmes kicks off a four-volume set on "USAAF Colours" with this impressive salute to American volunteers who flew with the RAF from 1937 to 1943.

The story of those intrepid Americans who joined up to fight Hitler prior to America's entry into the war has been told many times. None of those previous treatments, however, can compare to Holmes' book in terms of visual presentation.

Simply put, the book is a visual delight with dozens of black and white photos, many half-page, and 30 color profiles of Hurricanes and Spits flown by U.S. volunteers done in fine form by artist Mark Styling.

Likewise, the exploits of Andy Mamedoff, Billy Fiske, 'Red' Tobin, Bill Dunn, Gus Daymond, Don Blakeslee, Reade Tilley, Chesley Peterson and others who flew in the "Eagle" squadrons or other RAF units are nicely chronicled in the text.

All in all, a nicely done tribute to some brave Americans that is also a visual treat.
