5.0 out of 5 stars The Early Brass Band in America, 11 Nov 2007
By Roger Kennedy - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: American Brass Band Journal (Audio CD)
A fine CD reconstruction of 1850s and 1860s band music in America. Actually a combination of two older LPs that were collected onto one disc it is great to see these recordings back in print again. The linear notes are complete and pretty extensive. The selection of music is comprenshive of the period. The listener will be surprised to hear what the original verion of our national anthem was before it became what it is today. Some might have preferred it remained just a popular tune in favor of a more singable anthem!

Other sprightly selections include original versions of "Yankee Doodle", "Dixie" "Bonnie Blue Flag" and the like all played to perfection. Many fine Stephen Foster tunes are heard in their original versions. Brass lovers will enjoy the quality of the music, as well as the interesting tonality differences between then and today. This was the sound of the band in the USA in the years before Sousa and the newer instruments that were introduced in the post Civil War era. Strongly recommended for players and listeners alike who enjoy a peak into America's past where music certainly had a stronger appeal than it seems to today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crème de la crème, 29 Jun 2009
By Hans Pedersen-Dambo - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: American Brass Band Journal (Audio CD)
I found "The American Brass band Journal" searching the Internet for music with Frederick Fennell whose music I've been collecting since the early 60's when I met him in Stockholm.
This CD performed by The Empire Brass and friends gave me some of the most wonderful music moments ever. Even Harry Mortimer faded out far away. The Empire Brass plays brilliantly and sometimes so virtously that even my mind stumbles trying to follow the notes. It's stunning that this small ensemble has a pianissimo like a whispering and yet a fortissimo of a full 60 man orchestra.
Buy this CD! It will be one of your absolute favorites.
