Product Description

Product Description

The American Music Library is a major new series from Fantastic Voyage and is sure to be of considerable interest to music lovers with an interest in accumulating a substantial collection of hit singles and in particular our British Hit Parade fans. The American Music Library celebrates US hit singles big and small. Concentrating on only those singles that did not chart in the UK, it deliberately avoids duplication of tracks on compilations like the British Hit Parade series, which many collectors have assiduously purchased over the years. The Hits Of 1959 is a 90-track 3CD set which features: All 37 US Pop 10 hits from 1959 that didn t make the UK chart All 10 additional US Country and R&B chart-toppers that evaded the US Pop Top 10 (and again didn t make the UK charts) An additional 43 hits from the US Pop Hot 100 that didn t make the UK charts Subsequent volumes in the series, which is compiled and annotated by Austin Powell, will celebrate the hits of different years from the Fifties and Sixties, and it is our intention to also release companion volumes, which will dig deeper into the rich pickings that are the US Pop Hot 100, as well as singles that stalled in the Bubbling Under The Hot 100 chart. By doing so, the American Music Library will present all the biggest hits of each year and a substantial number of lesser hits, including many hard to find on CD. America was the engine room of the world s pop music in the late fifties; their music industry was far more mature than that in any other country and a plethora of small independent labels were able to compete quite efficiently with the likes of RCA, Decca, Capitol, MGM and the other majors that had been in business since the forties or even earlier. So, a Top 10 hit in America would translate into a hit in many other world territories...most of the time. Eleven of America s number ones that year made the UK charts and many of the Top 10-ers did the same, but far from all of them replicated their American success in the UK, as this collection amply demonstrates. If an American Top 10 hit of 1959 made the UK charts, you'll readily find it on the two British Hit Parade releases on Fantastic Voyage (FVQD036 and FVQD037). Here we present a real overview of the American music scene of 1959, all the Top 10 hits that didn t make the UK charts, the biggest country and R&B hits that also failed to chart in the UK, as well as a selection of other Hot 100 hits for your enjoyment.

3.0 out of 5 stars US hits from '59 22 Mar 2014
By Tony Martin TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
1959 and the American music industry was in a state of flux; fluxing awful, some might say. The King ws doing his bit for Uncle Sam, leaving the door open for many a young pretender, gifted with good looks and 'discussable' talent. At the same time, the music biz had decided to get a controlling grip on Rock'n'Roll and was bending it to its will, that is to say, emasculating it for profit. Oh dear...

The unique selling point of this somewhat lavish three CD set is American hits that didn't mean a light here in the UK. So you get 37 Pop Top Tenner's, six Country #1's, four r&b chart toppers and 43 Hot 100 hits, ranging from #1 to barely scraped in, a generous total of 90 cuts. There are a few 'old school' rockers here, Jack Scott, Bell Notes, George 'Thumper' Jones, Eddie Cochran, Chuck Berry, Ritchie Valens, the recently late Rusty York...s'about it. Other listenable artists include LaVern Baker, Coasters, Wilbert Harrison, Drifters, Ray Charles, Phil Phillips, James Brown, Ray Sharpe, Little Willie John, Bo Diddley, Titus Turner, Jackie Wilson and Dee Clark. Even a taste of doo-wop, so not s bad as I thought, tho I might have all these tracks many times over.

It gets sad when one contemplates much of the remainder. The laughably inadequate Fabian (great backing!), closely followed by Frankie Avalon. The twee Annette and Dodie Stevens and what's David Seville & The Chipmunks, Martin Denny and Franck Pourcel doing here? Idiot, because they charted! This set is aimed at the chartologist, or folk who like to have collections based on years, so you have to take the rough with the smooth. (Some 25 or so years later, John Fred might have had a minor charter over here with "Shirley", very popular at rockin' record hops...such was the fate of "Jungle Rock").

4.0 out of 5 stars happy memories 9 May 2014

Some good tracks here. reminds me of sitting in local milkbar and feeding the jukebox. A real nostalgia trip. Mind you, some of the tracks must have been minor hits, but the collection is none the worse for that!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all perfect 30 May 2014
Format:Audio CD
Just a heads up for buyers who demand accuracy. The version of 'Pink Shoelaces' on this set is NOT the 1959 hit version recorded for Chrystalette Records. It's the 1962 remake that Dodie Stevens did for Dot Records. Also, the producers have clearly 'borrowed' The Tempos' 'See You In September' from an Ace CD which has the song mastered too fast.
