Audrey Howard is one of my absolute favourite writers. This book is brilliant in its content and Audrey is typical in not ending it as you would expect. I felt the anger, love and betrayal experienced by the characters in the book.

When I started reading the book I was captivated by the story unfolding and the vividness with which the author describes the tragedies and the events leading to the beginning of the two women's successful business.

From then onwards, I was a bit disappointed in that we were given a lot of insight regarding Lacy's thoughts, actions, entrepreunerial spirit etc, but we were not given as much insight on Rose's. Rose seems to have a somehow passive role in the story. Something else that I found extraordinary was the liberal minds of the characters involved, which seemed a little too exaggerated - for the period in which the story unfolds. One would not expect to find so much understanding on James' part regarding his wife's sexuality and temper, and on the servants' part for that matter!

I would have expected an equally captivating story as that taking place in the first part of the book (i.e. their teenage years). On the whole, it was a good reading and I look forward to read more of the author's work.
