In the Bygone Days series featuring vintage icons of song, this excellent Al Bowlly compilation recalls the celebrated pre-war singer in all his vocal glory with twenty-three tracks representing his heyday period 1930-1940. Al's distinctive style, easy-going phrasing, and handsome demeanour placed him far above the more uptight male posturing of the period. Opening with a Ray Noble medley of THE VERY THOUGHT OF YOU/THE TOUCH OF YOUR LIPS and LOVE IS THE SWEETEST THING, this collection trawls through SWEET AND LOVELY, IT'S GREAT TO BE IN LOVE, YOU'RE MY EVERYTHING and YOU OUTA BE IN PICTURES with a few lesser known songs of the period to freshly symbolize the Thirties love of ballads. Accompanied by the Ray Noble, Roy Fox, Lew Stone, The Savoy Orpheans and New Mayfair orchestras, Al was a busy man with just hundreds of recordings to his credit, and I'm sure his voice on the airwaves brought a positive aura to troubled times.
