AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to B-Male Cable

The leader for strong connections

Because USB 2.0 is widely used to connect devices such as external hard drives, printers, digital-photography devices, and more, this USB 2.0 cable helps you maximise performance for your peripherals. For devices with an older USB version, this cable is backwards compatible so you can still make the connection.

What it connects

This cable features a standard Type-A USB connector on one end and a standard Type-B connector on the other. For example, you can plug the Type-A connector into your computer, then plug the Type-B connector into a device with a Type-B port. Printers and servers often have Type-B ports.

Solid, durable

Sturdy, with gold-plated connectors, this USB 2.0 cable can be disconnected and reconnected time and time again without signal loss.

Details

  • Durable, gold-plated connectors
  • Backwards compatible
  • Full 2.0 USB capability / 480 Mbps transfer speed

USB Version Numbers

There are a number of different USB version numbers (1.0, 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0). This indicates their transfer speed. The higher the version number, the faster they can work. However, to get the full power, the "host", the device and the cable must have the same version. If not, the lowest USB version in the chain will control the speed.

For example,if your computer has a 2.0 USB port, your cable is 3.0, and your phone is 3.0, you will achieve 2.0 speed. If all three (computer, cable and phone) have 3.0 then you will achieve 3.0 speed.

In the Box

The Basics range could easily be low-quality, bog-standard equipment as you'd often expect with anything that has a synonym of 'low-end' in its name. Yet this cable is probably seated at the complete opposite end of the scale. Of course, one product is no way to determine the classification of the whole range but it serves as a reasonable Litmus test.

As a brief but necessary first point, it's important to note that the gold plating is useless. That is, it serves the purpose of conducting electricity, transferring data, etc. but it holds negligible advantage over non-gold-plated cabling. It's the same with DVI, HDMI, or in fact any other cable that transfers digital data. Analog is a different matter, with enthusiasts split over whether OFC cabling gives any advantage, and how connection quality is paramount.

Yet digital either arrives or it doesn't - it's just 0s and 1s - and if it doesn't, USB 2.0's CRC correction will handle small issues. The bottom line is that by the time your non-gold-plated connector has degraded enough to hinder operation, you'll probably have more issues with the cable fraying or kinking, or the connector itself falling apart. On the other hand, it looks pretty nice and the plating method leaves the surface fairly even.

The cable itself is of a reasonably median weight and strength. It's not so strong that it stays in rigid shape, nor is it so heavy as to pull lightweight devices downwards. But then it's not so light or flimsy that it easily tangles or feels disproportionately weak or fragile. Overall, a nice cable with a good feel and nicely moulded connector boots.

Moving on to the packaging, I expected this to arrive in a padded envelope, or in some small cardboard.

Well there isn't a lot one can write about a USB cable. If you have a device which needs a USB A to B cable (most likely a printer or external hard drive) then this cable will be of great use to you, otherwise it won't. The contacts look like they might be gold-plated, and the general finish of the cable is quite good.

The 'frustration-free packaging' is of course nothing of the kind. It might be more friendly to the environment, but it is certainly not more friendly to the paying customer. Amazon's standard delivery boxes are far easier to open.

The really objectionable thing about this is the warranty: it is only valid in the United States. Despite paying significantly more for this cable than Amazon's US customers, apparently we are not judged worthy of having the same protection against defects.

Not a lot to say in addition to the reviews already posted. Good cable - does the job. I've used it to connect my computer to a printer and the length is adequate for a small desk, without getting tangled wires. It is great value - way cheaper than on the High Street.

Packaging is described as 'frustration free' - but the box is too large to fit through a letterbox. I expected it to be delivered in a padded envelope. If I wasn't in to take the delivery, I'd have had to rearrange the delivery time or trek down to my local post office depot - that would not be 'frustration free'. Hopefully, Amazon will change the packaging in the near future.

The selling points for this AmazonBasics branded cable are the six feet length and the gold plated connectors, both of which are supposed to be of greater benefit to the end user. But are they? Having a USB 2.0 cable six feet long certainly means you can have equipment away from each other if necessary, but every other one I use is of the same length; as for the gold plated connectors, as far as I can tell it made no difference to performance when transferring data. Yes, these type of connectors do assist in clarity when used on HDMI, optical and phono cables, but the inner wiring is usually of a much higher quality and if that isn't the case with this USB lead, it somewhat defeats the object.

A word on the `frustration-free packaging'. It came in a reusable cardboard box (probably three times bigger than needed) but the flip-up opening was covered by a plastic sheet, which had to be cut with a knife. I could have ripped it open but that would have made the box unusable.

I needed to replace a cable connecting a camcorder to my laptop. I had previously replaced a malfunctioning printer cable with one equipped with gold-plated connectors and I knew from my own experience that quality makes a big difference, so I was looking specifically for gold-plated connectors.

I am very happy with this purchase. I know it's only a cable, but it is also the means of transferring my videos to my pc and, without it, I cannot access my footage. The cable is sturdy and flexible, the connectors have a look of quality and my data is being transferred successfully.

I also bought a AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable 9.8 Feet / 3.0 m to connect a printer and all of the above also applies to that cable. A very good product at an affordable price. The packaging provided adequate protection and is environmentally friendly.
