To give this review some context, I'm also a long-time user of the original "full sized" Fire TV, which I bought on the day of release. It's in constant use, so much so that we decided to buy this Fire TV Stick for the TV in the kitchen. I think they both have different strengths and weaknesses. I hope this review will help you choose between the two versions.

## What do you need to make it work? ##

You need a decent WiFi signal in the location you intend to use the TV, and preferably an unlimited data package (otherwise, video streaming will burn through your data allowance in no time).

Your TV must have an HDMI port. [Edit 29/4/15: you can even use a computer monitor if it has speakers and an HDMI port that supports HDCP (HD Content Protection). Pretty much every TV made since 2003 will have this, but many monitors do not].

The device works best if you have an Amazon Prime subscription, which is an extra £79/year. This is required to access the large library of free movies and TV shows (movie rentals are £3.49 each for non-members). You can install Apps for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and other purveyors of fine video content, but really, all the emphasis is on Amazon's content, and the majority of the home screen is devoted to showcasing their latest movies & shows. You won't get the best out of this thing unless you're a Prime subscriber.

## Setup ##

The Fire TV Stick is tiny, and can be hidden behind a TV in seconds. Yes, you can buy a mount that holds the bigger model, but the Stick is a much cleaner solution.

I bought this as an electronic babysitter, for my husband, who is five. Oh, wait, not five, 48. I was pig-sick of him watching Netflix on his mobile phone, with his netbook pinging up Facebook messages, with the TV on full blast, and the sound from his Netflix leaking out of his earphones, because he had that on full volume as well, to counter-balance whatever was happening on the TV he wasn't watching. It has worked a treat, as he now watches endless hours of crap on the big TV, while his netbook and phone ping Facebook messages at him, and he lies on the couch, re-arranging his crotch, and grunting.

The installation was easy, despite the fact that I only have full use of one hand, I didn't need any screwdrivers, and I'm not allowed hammers anyway. I did stand on an apple that the dog had taken behind the TV, for dog-reasons, and it squidged between my toes a bit, but I don't suppose that's a universal installation issue, not everyone having a dog that hides fruit behind the TV.

The plug-and-play nature of the device meant that I was able to install without asking for help from a man, and I didn't even break any fingernails. I'm relatively certain I've deleted any links to my social media from Amazon, so the husband won't be able to ferret about, at two in the morning, while he's watching something with boobs in, or yet another concert from the time period when I was being potty-trained, and see all of the nasty things I say about him.

For me, it has been £35 well-spent, although the glut of adverts offering it for £25 have been a bit of a kick in the crotch, I could have spent the extra £10 on gin, but it would have been cheap gin, so there would have been no real gain.

The Fire TV Stick is a low cost, user friendly and compact media streamer device, for those that can make do without a microphone built into the remote control, and which plugs directly into an HDMI port on the side or back of your TV. It may be a better choice for anyone who doesn't want a series of large black boxes located below or adjacent to their TV.
Unlike the marginally cheaper Chromecast product, you get a very useful remote control with the Fire TV Stick (and a very intuitive menu system too). The Stick might well plug into your TV's HDMI port without any complications (my set up was straight-forwards), but a short extension cable is included for situations where a direct connection into the TV isn't possible. On my Sony 4K TV, I had an unused HDMI socket ready for the Fire Stick.
Additionally, a USB cable and power supply lead are included too - you may well have to use both, since a lot of TV USB ports won't provide enough charge to operate the Fire TV Stick. You'll get an on-screen warning to tell you if that's the case because the Stick can boot up even from an underpowered USB port.
The remote control is similar to ones with other media streamers, but it has no microphone. It communicates via Bluetooth so you don't need a direct line of sight from the remote to the Stick for it to work: this is potentially handy if your Fire Stick is tucked away behind your TV screen rather than plugged into the side of it.
You can buy a Voice Remote system separately if you want to (it's £25 or thereabouts), or else install the free App on your Android or iPhone (I've done just that on my iPhone 6).
