I read the first volume of JMS spiderman and it has made it into my top 5 comics of all time. This is also up there.

This is only a fraction below the first book, really it is almost just as good. Like the first one, it perfectly balances Peter Parker's personal life with the awesome action and fight scenes as Spiderman. This is an unbelievably book which i love and the last few issues deal with Peter re-living some of the worst moments in his life and it is really interesting to see and is executed perfectly. One thing I also loved was the way in which Peter and Mary Jane's relationship was explored and it was just as interesting as the awesome fight scenes which feature in this book.

This and the first book are gems for anybody into spiderman. This in the top 5. Why did I think it wasn't as good as the first? That was just down to personal opinion, but like I said, only a fraction below the first one.

Recently got this for my birthday. Great, just great. I actually laughed out loud a few times at the script. Not that there isn't drama, there is, just that the characters are captured absolutely beautifully, making them incredibly realistic. Definately both writer and artist operating near, or even at, their peak.
What you would not necessarily appreciate here unless you had read a lot of comics (where it does not happen), is that the writer and the artist completely gel together here, each very much complementing the other. Drawing other characters I have found John Romita's art to be inexpressive and a bit messy (e.g. Hulk), but here, while retaining his characteristic, somewhat square, style he is taught, neat and the character's faces very expressive, matching perfectly what is being said or related.
Highly recomended.

Well written with excellent art. 24 Jun. 2010

The simplest way of putting why I like JMS Spider-Man is because the man gets Spidey. He knows the characters and writes them well so that even if you don't like how the plot is shaping out you can still enjoy the story just because of how good the dialog is and how true to the characters their actions are.

It's an okay collection. But not the most exciting read. 31 Mar. 2012

I haven't read many Spider-man comics since the 90's when Todd McFarlane turned me off the character for awhile. But I don't feel overly good or bad about this particular collection. It just unfolds in a matter-of-fact way, with a more mature Peter Parker who doesn't crack many jokes or seem to be having much fun as Spider-man. He's considering the fact that his powers could have come from a totem (yeah, whatever) and trying to get back together with (or clumsily stumbling into) his estranged wife, M.J. Doctor Strange casually appears in Peter Parker's dream to warn him that a bad guy is coming after him. Captain America and others show up in similar boring fashion that makes me long for the days when Stan Lee would overstate everything as "spectacular!" or a horrendous meeting of gods and heroes that was worth getting a little worked up over. Spider-man comics have relied on the most outlandish plot twists over the years but in this collection, things are too low key. There is action, but I didn't feel very invested in the outcome of this. His marriage to M.J. seems devoid of passion and so does his superhero life. As unusual as JMS's version of Spider-man sounds, it just doesn't feel like anything special to me.

The best Spider-Man I've ever read. 28 Oct. 2012
By Angelo Reyes - Published on Amazon.com

This is good graphic storytelling. If you love Spider-Man as a character and want to see him living up to his full potential as a character, this is the book to read (along with the first Ultimate Collection trade, of course.) JMS actually helps the character develop into so much more than the wisecracking webshooter we've come to expect.

Straczynski goes into great detail with Spider-Man contemplating his place in the world, his place among other superheroes, his role as a husband, friend, mentor, and so much more. Peter Parker becomes a great character who accepts further responsibility when he takes on a new challenge in becoming a science teacher at the high school he attended in his younger days. He grows into a hero in his day-to-day life, and not just in his superheroic one.

We get a lot in this book. A look at Spider-Man's past, present, and future. We even get an interesting look at how Spider-Man's legacy could (and probably should) come to an end.

J. Michael Straczynski's Spider-Man run had the potential to become one of the greatest runs in the history of Marvel comics. Due to bad editorial decisions, this run does go tragically off the rails. Just stick with these first two trades and you'll be fine. I could go on and on about how much I loved this trade but I will just tell you that if you really like Spider-Man, you should pick up this trade and Amazing Spider-Man by JMS Ultimate Collection, Book 1 . Fans of great stories and true heroism will be pleased.

J.R. Jr's Art is The Only Good Thing Here. 15 May 2012
By James Donnelly - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
The writing is dull; the action is dull; only the art rises above the surface. There's no excitement here. JMS seems to be having ZERO fun with a character, that for the most part (when he's not being kicked around) NEEDS to be fun to write and, at the very least, interesting to read. JMS achieves nothing like that during his entire run.

The only reason this gets two stars is because of Romita Jr's art, which is fantastic.

All I really have to say about JMS' run on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is thank God for Dan Slott.
Good run 27 Sept. 2012

JMS' run on Spider-Man was quite good, I felt that he nailed the character of Peter Parker as he was going through some rough times. JMS always does well with character development, his Thor run is even better (even though "creative differences" with Marvel caused him to be unable to finish the arc).
