3.0 out of 5 stars Promising title, a rather boring story, 16 Nov 2006
By Rafal Gruszczynski (Warsaw Poland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After having read the "18 hours" I desperately wanted to learn more about the Australian SAS. "The Amazing SAS" seemed to be the one - especially that it focuses on modern times.

I must say that I fell asleep over this book only too many times. The first 140 pages (out of 340) could have been about 20 with no loss to its content. The action and more interesting facts and observations start with the Afghanistan chapter. But again it gets boring after some time.

All in all - you can skip the first 140 pages with no loss to history or action. Then you can probe the rest of it looking for some interesting paragraphs.

I am sure the author has done a great job in researching the facts, the events, talking to the soldiers etc. But the final efect is not gripping at all. It is rather boring. I cannot recommend this book.

3 stars - for some new facts and interesting observations. But this is as far as I can go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed history well worth the read., 12 Jan 2007
By TE (specialtactics.com) - See all my reviews
I liked this book. Although (as the previous reviewer stated) it gets a bit boring in places, overall it was an excellent and detailed account of the most recent and important ASAS operations. It includes a lot of "behind the scenes" information not normally included in a book. As a former member of a US unit attached to the ASAS, I thought the inclusion of STS personnel comments and insight particularly interesting and I commend the author for his keen insight and research.

A very well written book with all the details.
