Product Description

Review
A good guidebook for strangers to our county. It is well laid out and informative with some good suggestions for places to visit in our neighbouring counties too. --East Anglian Daily Times Magazine - Jan 07

Product Description
Discover Britain as you've never known it before, with "Amazing Places to Visit in Britain". "Reader's Digest" and a team of experienced travel writers, whose credits include the "Sunday Times", "Holiday Which?" and the "Daily Telegraph" among many others, have specially chosen the 1,000 most amazing places in Britain to feature in this book. From castles, cathedrals, stately homes and natural wonders to power stations, bellfoundries and even a water tower, this book reflects the diversity of fascinating places that Britain has to offer. Read about some of the world's best early medieval stained glass, found in Canterbury Cathedral, and then turn to an entry on the ossuary at St Leonard's church in Hythe housing 2,000 human skulls, or the Donnington Grand Prix collection at Donnington Park. "Amazing Places in Britain" is a modern guidebook to Britain, and as such includes entries you won't find in most UK guidebooks. From the Umbrella Shop on New Oxford Street in London to the Oldbury Power Station on the River Severn and a Soviet submarine in Folkestone harbour, this unique reference guide will ensure that you'll never see Britain in the same way again. The book is arranged by county and region for easy reference and includes a regional map for each section pinpointing the places featured as well as giving all the information you need to help you plan your visit. In addition, there are 54 special features, providing extra information about a particular topic relevant to the section in which it appears. Learn the history of the Somerset Levels, what prehistoric Uffington was like, or discover more about the diversity of ethnic Leicester. You'll also find walks, with accompanying maps, in Bath, along the Birmingham canals and in Constable's country. Whether you're looking for a place to visit or simply wanting to find out more about a region, you'll find plenty of inspiration in "The Most Amazing Places to Visit in Britain".

5.0 out of 5 stars Not all on the beaten track, 13 Dec 2008

(REAL NAME)
I love this book! I've used it a number of times to plan roadtrips and daytrips, as well as just simply to read. It would be easy to complain about all the things that AREN'T in the book, and it's true the chapters on Scotland, etc are markedly smaller than the England section. The whole point of the book is to tell you about things that you may not have heard of, or wouldn't necessarily find leaflets for if you were staying in the area.

We recently roadtripped to Scotland and made a point of seeking out things like Jedburgh Abbey, Carter Bar, and Scott's View. As a result we took more backroads, fought less crowds, and saw breathtaking scenery. I've also visited dozens more sites around the SE on the suggestion of the book, and never been disappointed.

The book itself is well-laid out, nice paper, and nice contruction. Despite some heavy usage, it's still in perfect nick.

And now it's cheaper than when I got it, so it's absolutely a good bargain!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have!, 24 Oct 2007
By Capella (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
If you appreciate the road less traveled by more than the usual tourist melting pot, this is a must have! I think the book is printed in photo paper all through out. It definitely feels so. The paper, layout and the print quality is very good. The content, even better. Brief descriptions and/or back ground of the amazing shot will make you want to go there all the more. I intend to tick my way all the way through this book! =)Buy it!!!!

I found this book to be very pretty and quite interesting. The one problem I have is that the way the entries are numbered is a bit hard to follow. Read more
