The Amazing Mind of Alice Makin is a wonderful story of a little girl that escapes her dark reality into a world of excitement and fireworks, infused by her vivid imagination. The book is written with a vibrancy that almost places the reader at the centre of the story. The strong bond between Alice and her friend Reggie is something readers of any age will recognize from their own childhood. The author has created a beautiful story of ups and downs and its intensity keeps you glued to every line to find out how Alice copes with reality, her imagination and the fine line between the two.

I really enjoyed reading this book as you really feel part of the story and even part of Alice's life. You experience her joys but also her fears, which shapes her into more than just a character. You actually relate to her in a way that makes you believe you know her or have even met her. Due to the effortless yet gripping writing style of the author the characters and the story come alive.

The Amazing Mind of Alice Makin is a product of an amazing mind of the author!

This is a very enjoyable novel. Alan Shea is highly inventive and keeps the reader on edge throughout. The story has us gripped from the start, we want to know more about the "different" boy and the narrator delights us with clipped poetic descriptions of everyday life from her "amazing mind". We can feel her fear, the real fear of her stepfather and the fear springing from her own imagination. The scene where the stairs are transformed is brilliant, being brought to a conclusion by the entrance of the upstairs neighbour in a gentle but humorous way. Tension is repeatedly built and reduced, keeping us turning the pages for the next episode. The whole book is a mix of gritty and at times brutal realism and flights of fantasy which become so confused in Alice's mind that she begins to question the whole meaning of reality. Even her cry for help to her adult friend Mrs Gilbey doesn't answer her question as although the sensible lady starts on the side of logic and science she falters and begins questioning her own answers. What is essentially a heavy philosophical debate is handled from a child's perspective without becoming patronising.
This is a definite "cross over" read, being suitable for a wide age range who can appreciate it on a mixture of levels, and an engrossing story from another "amazing mind". Give us more!
