King of Rock and Roll is a title most commonly given to Elvis but the ballad singer he was and the emotion shown on this cd prove that title rather too narrow. What we have here is the full collection of Presleys gospel recordings spanning 3 decades. The ironic thing is the only grammies he ever won were in the gospel category. Not always known for his application to certain material in his career, here we find total commitment from early classics such as Peace in the Valley to Amazing Grace dating from the early seventies. You do get the impression that Elvis was trying his best for his master. This collection is complete with a few extras such as a live version of How Great Thou Art from 1974 and an unreleased section at the end to make it attractive to those who may own the material already. Excellent sound and packaging help make it a must for any Elvis fan but the pity is that the average person probably knows more about his eating habits than his gospel recordings.

Elvis gospel music is a revelation; no-one could sing gospel music like the King, with fire, brimstone, soul, rock and funk. This is striking music from the master.

This collection is made up of all the tracks from the Peace in the valley EP and three LP's (His hand in mine, How great thou art and He touched me) plus various other tracks that didn't appear on any of those, together with some live cuts. If this sounds like a bit of a mixed bag, it isn't. For whatever reason, Elvis seemed to enjoy recording gospel music, so these recordings are as good as anything else he recorded.

Crying in the chapel was a massive hit for Elvis in Britain (where it was a number one) and America, but there are many other famous songs here. These include Amazing grace, You'll never walk alone (best known as a football anthem), Swing low sweet chariot (which has become a rugby anthem), I believe, How great thou art, Farther along and Peace in the valley. Even people who are not interested in gospel music are familiar with most, if not all, of these songs. Of the other songs here, A thing called love was a big hit for Johnny Cash but I'm not clear why Elvis included it on He touched me -its not really a gospel song, but Elvis sings it superbly. He is my everything is an adaptation of There goes my everything.

Elvis clearly took his religion seriously. It shows in these wonderful recordings, which no Elvis fan should ignore.

Anyone who doubts Elvis was one of the greatest singers of the 20th century should listen to the first of these 2 cds. The purity, control, heartfelt love and dynamic range you hear settles any argument. Here is the stuff Elvis was singing before he invented rock and roll - sentimental, and corny, I guess ("I believe in the man in the sky!") but the great tunes and the strength in the small but punchy arrangements will sweep away your doubts. The first twenty or so tracks here are the finest white gospel I ever heard. But unfortunately, it all goes wrong after that, and in come the swelling choruses and big fat orchestras, and what was moving has now become unbearable kitsch, as did Elvis' secular music. Put it like this - if you like "American Trilogy" you'll like cd 2 as well, but if you're a Sun Sessions fan, only cd 1 will do.

Of all the music Elvis created, through all his influence in breaking down the barriers in his early Rock 'n' Roll days, through his movie and conert years Gospel was his first love. This collection is fantastic, whether you are religous or not (independant of what religion you are, if you are) this music is uplifting.
I've said it in reviews elsewhere, Elvis could sing anything and make it believable. Who would imagine any other artist switching between "One Night (With you)" or as it was actually originall written "One Night (of sin)", as just one example, the soft gentleness of "His Hand In Mine". Even as The King, fans attending his 70's concerts gave "How Great Thou Art" a huge reception makign it high point during performances. Gospel was honoured in his hallowed 1968 Comeback Special and "Where Could I Go But to The Lord" is featued here. All his grammy winning perfromances are featured here. This collection is faultless from beginning to end.
