5.0 out of 5 stars Every Fisherman Should Own A Copy 27 Nov 2011
By Paul VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I can't imagine any fisherman not enjoying reading this book (or their children).

There are lots of incredible stories served up which cover dangerous fishing, failed fishing, the 'ones that got away' etc. The writing style is lovely and I can imagine plenty of people who would cherish reading this. It's truly entertaining throughout regardless of whether you're a fisherman or not. Paul Knight genuinely comes across as a really nice guy, whether it's when he's discussing overfishing or fishing off Brighton Pier.

It's a great gift for Christmas for fisherman, wanabee-fisherman or just somebody plain interested in a good yarn.

Bought for my uncle, a keen fly fisherman, he could not put it down! Given on Christmas day, and made a very welcome gift. Lots of different fishing stories to keep any type of fisherman happy, from those that got away....to the comradeship which makes the social aspect of fishing so addictive, enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars A yarn at bedtime 5 Oct 2011
By NBG
Format:Hardcover
Anyone familiar with Paul Knight's pieces in 'Trout and Salmon' will not be surprised at the directness of the style with which he presents these tales of angling daring-do from across the world. The very task of compiling these stories, let alone getting them down in publishable shape, would overcome most less committed writers but he has produced a 'must have' bedside book for any angler (no matter what their code) - and indeed for many others who simply enjoy a good yarn about the great outdoors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fisherman's tales... 29 Aug 2012
By The Truth TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This book of fishy tales features angling stories from around the world. Some from the river banks of the UK - some from shores as far afield as Alaska, Africa, India and the Tropics. They encompass all types of rod & line fishing (fly/sea/coarse/fishing etc.) and all types of quarry piscatorial (Trout/Salmon/Tiger Fish/Pike/Marlin and so on).

Effectively a book of short stories, it's well written and, as one would might expect in an anthology of this type, often written in good humour. Some are simple descriptions of days out that any angler would envy while others fall into the class off 'the one that got away'! Some are rather far-fetched but all are fun to read.

The author is obviously a very experienced angler and writes from expert knowledge, so the budding angler will no doubt find many useful hints and tips hidden amongst its pages. It makes a good bedtime read or something to flick through on the downstairs loo, and I'd recommend it as a present to any angler who wants a good, light-hearted read about his or her hobby.

By possessed.by.a.lemon TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
105 pages into Amazing Fishing Stories comes the following sentence: "Fishing tales don't necessarily need massive fish to make them stand out in the memory." I'm glad author Paul Knight noticed. Better late than never, but too late for the opening two sections of this book that left me cold. The first problem is that there can be a feeling off detachment as Knight passes on these second-hand tales in a short story format and has to balance the desire to remain faithful to what he's been told and keeping the reader hooked. His poetic licence is an open admission and it can be little coincidence that his own reminiscing is where the writing is most effective.

The second problem is the book's (probably unintentional) misleading title. Very few if any of these fisherman's tales could truly be regarded as amazing, but too many at the front end are concerned with little beyond the alleged amazingness of the fish itself and fail to back it up with an engaging story. You may as well forget about the events leading up to the catches and just list the sizes of the fish caught. What would Freud say about such preoccupations?

As I read through the slippery tale of a massive conger eel, 'Attrition and Slime', I was waiting for the conger to come back to life after being captured and lugged around a house to minimal comedic effect. The eel remains thoroughly dead and so it seems feels like another unsatisfactory snapshot in a tedious slideshow that you've found yourself being forced through. Thankfully, later on, when the book gets good, there is zombie fish redemption in the form of a reanimated pike that recovers from two blows to the head and a spell out of water, presumed dead and ready to eat, only to become the star of a BBC TV show. Now that's a story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tight lines for Christmas. 22 Nov 2011
Format:Hardcover
Don't you let this one get away. 'Amazing Fishing Stories' is a great catch for Christmas. While a fish might look odd in your stocking, this won't.
Paul Knight has collected an exciting creel-full of fish tales which relate blow-by-blow highlights of epic reel-screaming battles, perfect for the angler on the move: forget the philosophy, here's the action. I'll buy it. Tight lines.

5.0 out of 5 stars another 'exactly what it says on the can' book 18 Nov 2011
By Colliesaluki VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
this book is exactly what it says it is; 'Amazing Fishing stories'.

easy to read yet for the fishing addict, cringingly nail-bitingly exciting in places and all the more amazing as the stories are true.

an addictive read set in short stories which is fatal, the 'just one more story before i stop reading' syndrome applies.

If you like all the excitent that comes with the quest to 'hook the big one' the suspense, the fight and the real-life drama, you'll like this, if youre a lifelong fishing fanatic you'll love it.
