5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Star Facts 19 Mar 2013
By Dr.DiMedici - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The bad. None, if knowledge is what you are craving. This distinguished book WILL amaze you with the animals you did not know existed, as the book is a compendium of the most obscure and obtuse animal facts on the planet. I have a PHD in biology and have studied animals and reptiles on 4 continents, yet I did not know about over 95% of these animals. I purchased the book originally for my son in 2nd grade who is interested in animals and he loved the color photos that accompany the animals. He could not have never dreamed of the animals in here. There are wonderful descriptions of the animals and the color pictures are just world-class high definition! The facts are mind blowing, such as a "seas squirt" that attaches to rocks and eats its own brain for nutrients! Did you know the albatross is capable of taking flight for over three years without landing?!?!?!?! Did he make that up???? They are called facts and well, the facts and knowledge in here are well worth the price of admission. A+ work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knowledgeable, funny, and amazing 19 Mar 2013

I love learning about animals and this book doesn't disappoint. Some things you may heard before but some, like worms that hunts in packs and the cycliophora that lives on a lobster's lips, are truly mind blowing. Can't wait to read the whole book and share it with my nieces and nephews!

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprising and Entertaining! A great thing to have on your Kindle. 20 Mar 2013

Despite my Kindle reference, I actually ordered this book in paperback, as a gift for my Nephews. In fact, I ordered two, one for each boy. When I opened the package, and flipped through the gorgeous, full color pictures and well ordered text, I immediately knew that somehow, only one of these was going to find its way to my bro's house.

The pictures are neat, the facts are amazing and interesting. Like another reviewer, I've studied animals of all types for a long time, and worked with them some professionally. Given that, I was really surprised at the depth of the research and the freshness of the information, unlike so many other lists of "amazing facts" that are either common knowledge to anyone who reads or downright false. This book is full of stuff that I never even thought about knowing!

If you want a great conversation starter for your coffee table, spring for the beautiful, full-color paperback- but I stand by my kindle statement- either way, this would be a fantastic thing to have on a car trip, at the airport, or any other place where children (or adults!) need to be entertained for a while. I can imagine endless fun passing the book back and forth, quizzing each other. Be forewarned- it's gonna be a hard quiz game, but a fun and interesting one. Some of the stuff in here will really blow your mind! (I'm still a little bit dazed by what I found out about dolphin nursing mechanics. . . but your gonna have to buy the book to find out why!)
3.0 out of 5 stars Inaccuracy 6 July 2014
By avid reader - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I skimmed a few of the entries in the preview and immediately found a questionable fact. I hoped to use the book as a resource for some writing I am doing. Fortunately, I am fact-checking each piece of information. Nowhere did I find that "A type of swamp dwelling antelope called the Sitatunga loves the water so much, it often sleeps with only its nostrils above the surface." What I did find was that the Sitatunga will submerge in that fashion to escape predators. That's a far cry from doing it for "love" of the water, or when sleeping.

Probably most of the facts are accurate or nearly so, but be careful of quoting this source if you are expecting precise accuracy.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great 14 Oct 2013

It is good but if 150 to 200 types of animals become extinct then there would be no life on earth so some of it is not true
