Product Description

Product Description

This book takes the student on a journey through his own mind and returns him to the chess board with a wealth of new-found knowledge and the promise of a significant gain in strength. Most amateurs possess erroneous thinking processes that remain with them throughout their chess lives. These flaws in their mental armour result in stinging defeats and painful reversals. Books can be bought and studied, lessons can be taken -- but in the end, these elusive problems always prove to be extremely difficult to eradicate. Seeking a solution to this dilemma, the author wrote down the thoughts of his students while they played actual games, analysed them, and catalogued the most common misconceptions that arose. This second edition greatly expands on the information contained in the popular first edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, 7 Sep 2002
This review is from: The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery (Paperback)
From the glossy cover to the myriad of tests at the end, this IS the best chess book I have read. It explains how to read the board through not only the games of masters but of amateurs. This extra insight proves essential in not only understanding what to do, but also what not to do. If you want a book of clever combinations and cheap tactics, this is not for you. But if you want to gain a fundemental understanding of what is happening on the board, this is a great starting place.
The book does assume knowledge of basic chess tactics and hence is not recommended for the absolute novice. Anyone wishing to advance to lower club level and beyond, however, needs to read this book. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best chess book I own, 13 Mar 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery (Paperback)
I have a modest chess library (60+ titles) of carefully selected books, and I can honestly say that this is the one that has done the most for my chess understanding; boosting me more than 500 rating points within the space of a year. I recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone serious about wishing to improve his/her game. The lessons and long annotations are exemplary, and the way we get to "see" inside amateur players' minds and follow their thoughts are most instructive.

4.0 out of 5 stars It makes you think differently!, 13 Mar 2008

This review is from: The Amateur's Mind: Turning Chess Misconceptions into Chess Mastery (Paperback)
This book has certainly made me think about chess in a different way ... I especially liked the section about assessing the value of knights against bishops and vice versa.

Essentially, the purpose of this study book is to demonstrate how differently the players of varying chess grades approach the same board position.

I like Silman's comments and his frankness. In my opinion he has the balance right - this book is probably appropriate for grades 1200 all the way to 2200 ... there is a nice assortment of material to pay attention to and glean information from, which is divided into sensible sections.
It is a nice accompanying book to a chess combinations book - I liked it!
