Product Description

AMARA, Princess of Egypt, the once-beautiful wife of Mentuhotep the First, lies in her coffin in the Charles Ward museum. Dead these 4000 years, now she's just an inanimate bundle of withered skin and desiccated bone. Or is she? When Barney the nightwatchman, discovers that the mummy's coffin has been broken open, it seems grave-robbers are at work, out to steal valuable artefacts, just as their kind have done for centuries. It's a pity Barney and the guards can't tell the authorities how the mummy came to be missing. But the dead can't testify to anything. Now Amara is free again, driven by an ancient need that can only be assuaged at the cost of human life. No one can oppose her, no bullet can stop her and nothing can kill her - for she is dead already.

Fabulous 6 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
In this book, Laymon manages to transform a ridiculous series of events into an entirely credible story: a 4000 year-old violent throat-ripping mummy, a sadistic sex arena in which caged humans are abused (to their pleasure mostly, and not by the mummy either), a dog, security guards, a lonely blind woman, a humungously-hung Arab, a policeman and the deliciously disgusting Mable and her mother. Brilliantly written. Amazingly well-linked. Be prepared to lose sleep - this book is a genuine page-turner. Read it. Recommend it. The whole story made complete sense to me. Am I worried for my sanity? No. But if, upon recommendation to other folk, you are asked to explain the plot, they WILL think you insane. So what?

Superb. 18 Jun 2003
Format:Hardcover
AMARA was a very pleasant surprise. It was written early in Laymon's career and only recently published - so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was impressed to see that he displays such maturity even in his earlier writing. The book is filled with fascinating characters and the plot is fast, sleek and twisted. It reminds me of CUTS and THE MIDNIGHT TOUR - two of my favourite Laymon books.

To the reviewer below who doubts that Laymon wrote this book: you should read A WRITER'S TALE. This is Laymon's autobiography and, in one section, he discusses the writing of AMARA (which was then known as DEAD CORSE) and gives the reasons why he hadn't published it before then.

I highly recommend this book, to Laymon fans and horror fans alike.

THE KING OF HORROR 12 Jun 2003
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
Wow, what a read! I finished this book in 3 days!! It has all the classic Layman elements that make him in my opinion the best horror writer in the world. He quickly builds up all the little subplots and tension with such great skill I couldn't put the book down! Be warned though, this is the most gruesome story he has written for a while. I won't ruin the plot for you but I recommend this book to all Layman fans out there. You won't be dissapointed.

Amara
While this isn't one of Richard Layman's best works, it's still a good read. There's something vaguely disturbing about Laymon's work that leaves you wanting more. Read more

Laymon or not?
As this book has been released some time after the great mans death I was a little sceptical as to whether this would actually be all his work. Read more

Mummy from Hell!
AMARA is exciting and scary. It has a similar structure to Laymon's CUTS - ie. a rich tapestry of storylines and characters woven together into a satisying whole. Read more
