About the Author

Nick Bruno is a freelance travel writer and journalist. His dad is Neapolitan and he spent his childhood eating his nonna’s fried eggs with mozzarella and following his uncle, the well–known crooner Luciano Bruno, around the piano bars of Campania. He spends lots of time in Italy and the rest of the year trying to lose some weight.

Shona Main also peaked too soon as Pop Editor of Jackie magazine when just 20. In a naive attempt to change the world she had short and not quite as interesting careers in law and politics. She has since returned to frippery and now writes about Italy, Scotland, art and popular culture. They both co–authored the Frommer’s with Your Family guide to Northern Italy, which came runner–up for the 2007 Italian State Tourist Board’s Best Travel Guide.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good travel companion 9 Jun 2009
By Lendrick VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Took this with us for a week in Sorrento and it proved to be very useful. A decent mix of practical information (how to get places, recommended eating places etc.) and guidebook, it gives a good background to the area, and as the title implies focuses on family friendly aspects rather than the latest trendy bars.

Minor annoyances are the 'kids will love' comments that litter the book - not all kids like the same thing - and on one or two occasions directions weren't clear.

Overall though definitely worth your while if you are traveling to that part of the world - and I'd certainly recommend that you do.

1.0 out of 5 stars A disappointing read 30 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
We took this guide book on our recent holiday to Italy with our two children, aged 10 and 12. I bought it in the hope that it would give us a different angle on some of the places we planned to visit, but felt that in reality it did not point you towards child-friendly activities (other than beaches etc which we all know about). Actually, it seemed more designed to assuage the guilt which parents might feel doing normal adult stuff by promising them that "children will love it". Does anyone really think that a long drive along a road with hairpin bends and a nice view (the Amalfi drive) would classify as the number one children's favourite activity in the area, or that it would provoke "whoops of exhilaration" from the back seat? Or that children would get excited by the prospect of looking at a fountain? Get real! On top of this, the book provides insufficient detail about the sites it describes, and is written in an extremely annoying, gushing tone. Get a mainstream guide book like Lonely Planet instead - it will be much more use!
